Rockstar Games has revealed which of its titles will function on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Backward compatibility has been a hot topic the last couple of years, with Microsoft leading the charge in augmenting the feature’s popularity by expanding the Xbox One’s list of backward compatible titles from 2018 onward. From first-generation Xbox classics to PS2 and PS3 entries, veteran gamers have been craving the ability to relive classic experiences.

There has been a lot of buzz among the gaming community regarding the extent to which previous generations’ games will be playable on each respective next-generation console. The feature has been a major focus for the Xbox Series X, while the PlayStation 5 has far less to offer in that capacity. Xbox fans will be able to play games ranging all the way back to the original Xbox and Xbox 360, but PlayStation enthusiasts may only have access to games from the PS4 generation, though, only some of those titles will take advantage of the PS5’s technological improvements.

With the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X launching next week, Rockstar Games has revealed which of its titles will function on the next-generation systems. As expected, Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 will work, as will L.A. Noire and its PlayStation VR edition – L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files. Players will be able to carry over all their saved game progress from the current generation, and the games will be backward compatible with both the disc and digital versions.

All other previously backward compatible games from PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will also carry over, including the following:

  • Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles:
  • PlayStation 2 titles:
    • Bully
    • Grand Theft Auto III
    • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
    • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
    • Manhunt
    • Max Payne
    • Red Dead Revolver
    • The Warriors

Gamers who are newer to the industry may not care much about backward compatible titles from eras prior to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but many players who grew up on these games in the early 2000s love reliving these classics. While it can be difficult to sometimes get over the outdated graphics after having been spoiled by modern technology if one is able to set that aside the nostalgia is phenomenal. From taking over different turfs in GTA: San Andreas to popping pain killers in Max Payne, classic games offer a lot of thrilling and hilarious features modern titles do not.

However, despite the immense popularity of the backward compatibility feature, it’s the quality of modern titles that will determine the success of next-generation consoles, as well as overall system performance and reliability. Hopefully, the Xbox Series X doesn’t fall into the same misfortune of the Xbox One X’s early days due to problems with overheating, and ideally, the PlayStation 5 won’t suffer from the abysmal download speeds of the PlayStation 4. Both consoles sporting internal SSDs is great, but external storage is almost going to be a requirement for many dedicated gamers, and the Xbox Series X currently has the PS5 beat in that regard.
