Bryce Dallas Howard is joining the cast of the Elton John biopic Rocketman. The film was green-lit by Paramount this past April and has been adding to the growing cast for the past few months. Howard has been a rising star in Hollywood with credits that include the Jurassic World films, Oscar-nominated The Help, and an episode of the sci-fi drama Black Mirror. Moviemaking runs in the family, as Howard is the daughter of Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard. With an established resume of diverse projects, Howard will join the growing ensemble of the movie.
Howard is coming off the box office success of the sequel Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom where she reprised her role of Claire Dearing. The film ended its theatrical run with an impressive $1.6 billion haul. Howard will be joining the likes of Jamie Bell, Taron Egerton, and Richard Madden. As casting continues, more names will be added to the project - with Howard's simply being the latest.
As reported by Variety, Howard will be playing the role of Sir Elton John's mother in the biopic. The film will follow John and his emergence as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music through to his career as a music superstar and his partnership with songwriter Bernie Taupin. With the film taking place in the 1970s and chronicling much of John's life, it is likely the feature will include songs from the 1972 album Honky Chateau and 1973's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
Rocketman is fleshing out key roles in the life of John. Egerton is tackling the role of the iconic pop star, while Bell will be playing Taupin. Former Game of Thrones star Madden will portray music manager John Reid. Dexter Fletcher, who most notably stepped in to finish filming of the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, will direct Rocketman, while Oscar-nominee Lee Hall has penned the script. The film is set to release in May 2019.
Rocketman is assembling quite an extensive and surprising group of actors. It's great to see lesser-known stars like Bell and Egerton, who fans may know for only a handful of roles, taking on a special project where their talents can truly be center stage. With Madden picking up projects here and there, fans will get to see the former King in the North back in a high profile role. The recent addition of Howard will likely draw a new fan base and further interest to the film. Among her three aforementioned co-stars, Howard is the only American that has been cast. John himself will be serving as a producer on the film, which likely means for any member of the cast, he will be able to provide insight and expertise whether pertaining to personal moments or performances. Regardless, Rocketman is shaping up in front of and behind the camera to become one of the more promising films of 2019.
