The enormously successful game-building platform Roblox could soon arrive on the Switch, PS5, and Oculus Quest 2, its developer's CEO revealed during a conference call. The title is already available on PC, mobile, and Xbox, but has been conspicuously missing from some of the world's most popular devices.

Although superficially similar to MinecraftRoblox offers powerful tools that allow for players to build full-fledged games within its framework. Some of them, such as Adopt Me!, have made enough money to sustain outside studios. The platform is flexible enough that it can even support games designed for radically different formats, such as Jailbreak, which began its life as a Half-Life mod. Up to 150 million or more people play Roblox at least once per month, according to a recent report. This makes the prospect of expansion almost inevitable.

"Switch, PlayStation, Quest - all of these platforms make perfect sense for Roblox," GamesRadar quoted Roblox Corporation's David Baszucki as telling investors in a quarterly result call. The executive didn't explicitly announce that ports were coming, but companies typically avoid Baszucki's affirmative language if they're only considering a product. Teasing something that isn't planned could disappoint investors. In addition, this change very much aligns with the reported desire to expand Roblox's appeal beyond just the younger audience.

An Oculus Quest port could actually prove to be the most significant. While the Switch and PS5 are more lucrative sales targets, Roblox has never had a VR version and could become a killer app for the Quest 2. Success there could fuel VR in general, which continues to grow but has had relatively few killer apps, the most famous examples being Beat Saber and Half-Life: Alyx. Unlike most VR headsets, the Quest 2 is a wireless, completely standalone device, even if its best graphics still demand a connected PC. Indeed Roblox could just be getting a VR update for its PC edition.

It's not clear when confirmation of the Roblox ports might happen, but the next best opportunity would be during this June's E3 2021 online expo. Traditionally E3 is the biggest gaming convention of the year, a can't-miss event for all but the richest publishers and console makers, some of whom have turned to their own private livestreams to horde attention. Even those companies will often organize news around E3 since they're more likely to pick up viewers and don't want competitors to steal the spotlight. Given the vast reach of Roblox, it might be able to survive just doing its own event.
