Oo-de-lally! Behind the Scenes of a 'Robin Hood' Battle

“Robin Hood and Little John walkin’ through the forest; laughin’ back and forth at what the other’ne has to say.” Ah, Disney’s Robin Hood, what a classic cartoon movie; Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood, however, will not be so warm, fuzzy or musical. Even though I wasn’t a fan of the background music from the latest trailer for Robin Hood, I’m still very much looking forward to watching Russell Crowe don the leather, bows and arrows to give Prince John hell.

Russell Crowe trades in his unmanly roman gladiator skirt for manly, um, tights, to play Robin Hood is this latest take on the English legend of the bad guy turned good guy fighting for the people of Nottingham, by director Ridley Scott (who is somewhat a legend in his own right).  Joining Crowe are Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian, Mark Strong as the Sheriff of Nottingham, Oscar Isaac as Prince John and of course Kevin Durand as Hood's sidekick and best friend, Little John.

Thanks to the guys over at Cinema Blend for pointing us to this behind-the-scenes video from FilmStar, shot during the filming of a battle scene from Robin Hood. There really isn’t anything new here to wet your appetite, but I do find these types of videos intriguing.

For some people, these types of videos take away from the “magic” of making films by showing viewers how the directors and special FX department make things click. For me, it’s just the opposite; I love seeing the guys dressed in street clothes throwing handfuls of dirt in the air, over the shoulder of the camera operator and into frame. The guy in the Bert and Ernie t-shirt swinging a sword in front of the lens while motioning for guys to run back and forth is classic.

Looks like Scott is making his version of Robin Hood much darker and more action-packed. Horses, mud, arrows, swords, mud, blood, fighting, mud, maces, did I mention mud? The Medieval Times were not the cleanest of times and as much as I enjoyed Prince of Thieves, that movie was never very realistic about the grit and grime of the times. People back then where much like my college roommate – they didn’t bathe very much.

Do you think behind-the-scenes videos give away too much information and ruin the “magic” of movies for you? What did you think about this clip and what are your thoughts on the newest version of Robin Hood?

Robin Hood shoots his arrows into theaters May 14th, 2010.
