Potential spoilers for Robin #6 ahead!
As the League of Lazarus tournament finally kicks off properly, Robin slaughters his rivals. In a special preview for Robin #6, on sale September 28 in print and digital, Batman’s former sidekick unleashes his fury on his fellow combatants, some of which include faces familiar to readers.
The latest Robin series follows Damian Wayne as he strikes out on his own. Grieving the death of Alfred Pennyworth, Damian has entered the League of Lazarus tournament. This unique tournament, held on a mysterious island built on top of a giant Lazarus pit, is comprised of some of the most brutal fighters from around the DC Universe; Robin has so far encountered ReSpawn, who bears a strong resemblance to Deathstroke as well as Connor Hawke, the former Green Arrow. The Tournament allows deceased combatants to return up to three times via the Lazarus Pit, and the tournament does not even fully start until everyone has died at least once. The winner is granted immortality. That condition has been met, and now the Tournament is set to kick into high gear in a special preview for Robin #6, written by Joshua Williamson, with art by Gleb Melnikov, colors by Luis Guerrero and letters by Troy Peteri.
DC shared an exclusive preview with Comic Book Resources, including interior art as well as both the regular cover by Melnikov and the variant by Francis Manapul. The pages show Robin square off against Blue Shrike, one half of Double Dare, a pair of Nightwing villains; Blue Shrike promises to avenge his brother, to which Robin replies: “whatever.” He then fights Tengu, who he has also tangled with before. Robin makes short work of all of them. Also included are other glimpses of the Tournament, as combatants fight for the chance to live forever. As the preview ends, Mother Soul approaches Robin, advising patience in the tournament. Robin is sure she is up to something and vows to find out what it is; Mother Soul is seemingly non-plussed.
Before his time as Robin, Damian Wayne was raised by his mother Talia ‘al Ghul and the League of Assassins to be one of the planet’s most ruthless killers. Damian’s stint as Robin was replete with instances of Batman reigning him in, as he struggled not to give into his base instincts. Batman has been successful at tempering Damian, but the League’s training runs deep, and even years after he left them, he still retains his killer instinct. Unlike Gotham City however, here Damian can cut loose, knowing that anyone he kills will be resurrected later. Damian does just that here, brutally dispatching both Tengu and Blue Shrike. However, these were low-ranking opponents—how will he fare against Connor Hawke? Or ReSpawn?
The League of Lazarus tournament promises immortality to the winner, and now that it has kicked into high gear, Robin is ready, slaughtering his opponents on the way to the top.
