The Batman’s Robert Pattinson has just inked a new first-look production deal with Warner Bros., which also marks the actor’s first foray into producing. Pattinson, who first made his mark as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, became a household name as the vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight saga. In more recent years, his prowess as a dramatic actor began earning him serious critical acclaim after starring in a series of independent films before he returned to mainstream filmmaking with Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. In 2019 he was also announced as the new Batman, replacing Ben Affleck when he departed the role in January of that year.

Deadline reports that this latest deal, which also encompasses Warner Bros. owned New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. television and HBO Max, will cover both theatrical films, streaming video on demand via HBO Max and television properties. Courtenay Valenti, President, Production and Development for Warner Bros. Pictures, and Richard Brener, President & Chief Creative Officer of New Line Cinema have praised Pattinson’s talent for “identifying dynamic new filmmakers” and “nurturing exciting story ideas into compelling screenplays”. Pattinson himself has stated:

Warner Bros Pictures and HBO have always been synonymous with groundbreaking filmmaking. I’m thrilled to be working with them to discover the most exciting new voices in film and television and help bring their visions to life. I’ve loved working with the studio over the years and have so much respect for their dedication, their willingness to take chances and their desire to push the envelope creatively.

With The Batman now scheduled to hit cinemas in March 2022, and a live-action Gotham PD spinoff already in the pipeline, there’s a good chance some of this deal may point to Pattinson potentially donning the Dark Knight’s cowl more than once. However, as Pattinson has proven himself to be an extraordinarily versatile artist, not only as an actor, but also as a singer-songwriter who has also leant his talents to the soundtracks for Twilight, How to Be and High Life, this latest move will also see him doing far more than just beating up Gotham’s criminal underbelly.
