One of the most heartbreaking scenes in video game history claimed a notable victim, as The Batman star Robert Pattinson has admitted that Aerith's infamous death scene in the original Final Fantasy VII made him cry. It was difficult (but not impossible) for video games of the NES and SNES era to make players get emotionally immersed in their stories, as the limited technology meant that it was hard to tell engaging ones.

The release of Final Fantasy VII in '97 (alongside Chrono Trigger, which predated it by 2 years) was considered by many to be a turning point in video game narrative, as it featured a massive storyline spread across three discs, each with their own extended FMV cutscenes. Final Fantasy VII broke the hearts of gamers around the world, when beloved party member Aerith Gainsborough was cut down by Sephiroth at the end of the first disc. The developers had worked hard to make sure that the player grew to care for Aerith, just to make the knife hurt more when they twisted it. The death of Aerith is often considered to be one of the saddest moments in video game history.

There are many game critics and reviewers who have admitted that they cried when Sephiroth killed Aerith, and a celebrity has just joined their ranks. Robert Pattinson was recently interviewed by the Gamespot Universe while promoting Tenet, and he was asked if he had a favorite video game of all time. According to Pattinson, his favorite game was Final Fantasy VII, and that one of the only times he cried in his life was when "Aeris" died.

Aerith's demise in Final Fantasy VII is one of the most famous moments in video game history, and many fans expected to see it happen again when Final Fantasy VII Remake was released earlier this year. It seems that Aerith doesn't have to die again, as Final Fantasy VII Remake ended with the main characters fighting and defeating the literal arbiter of fate. Aerith had a chance to kick Sephiroth's behind in FF7 Remake and she could do so again in the sequels, in order to escape her famous death.

Pattinson is going to be busy over the next year finishing production on The Batmanwhich was paused due to COVID-19. It's possible that, by the time he has finished, the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake will be finished, and he will have a chance to cry all over again. With that being said, there is no guarantee that Aerith will die in the remake series. The ending of Final Fantasy VII Remake established that the cast has broken free from their destiny and can forge a new path, so maybe the new Batman can save his tears for a different game.
