Robert Downey Jr. Pays Tribute to His Spider-Man Tom 'Underoos' Holland

Robert Downey Jr. shares a birthday message to Tom Holland that references Spider-Man’s debut in Captain America: Civil War. After the events in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, it’s almost hard to believe Holland’s Spider-Man has only been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for three years.

Spider-Man’s introduction to the MCU was a most fans were anticipating for years, and it was finally possible after the deal between Sony and Disney that allows Spidey to appear in Marvel movies. His first appearance happened in Captain America: Civil War, where he was recruited by Tony Stark himself. In typical Tony fashion, he immediately referred to Peter Parker by various nicknames, most notably “Underoos” - a reference to a brand of underwear for children that typically feature superhero designs. Spidey and Holland have grown up a lot since then, and Downey Jr's birthday messages celebrates Holland's development from “Underoos” to fully-fledged Avenger.

Via his Twitter account, Robert Downey Jr shared the birthday message for Tom Holland in his very peculiar style, recalling Spidey’s time as “Underoos”. The first time we saw Holland in full Spider-Man costume was in a trailer for Civil War that features a part of the film's airport battle. In it, Spider-Man arrives after Tony signals him, calling out “Underoos!” Spider-Man then takes Captain America’s shield and ties his hands with webbing  before landing a perfect superhero pose.

Peter Parker has come a long way since his “Underoos” days, facing villains like Vulture and Thanos himself, all the while also juggling his personal and school lives. Not to mention, he was one of the heroes who turned to dust from Thanos’s snap only to came back into being and immediately fight the biggest army anyone has ever seen. This summer Peter will return in Spider-Man: Far From Home, where he will be recruited by Nick Fury to team up with Quentin Beck aka Mysterio.

Tony became a mentor to Peter in the same way that Downey Jr was to Holland on set, which makes Tony's death in Avengers: Endgame all the more heartbreaking. Now, Peter will need to take all those lessons he learned from Tony and become an even better hero. Spider-Man: Far From Home is sure to be a turning point in the arc and character development of Spider-Man, setting him up for upcoming phases of the MCU.

It’s also heartwarming to see the cast members of the MCU interacting on social media on special occasions such as birthdays, especially when they do it in their own style. Although it’s still hard to see where Tony ends and Robert begins, at least we know both are proud of Tom Holland.
