Netflix’s Wednesday will see Tim Burton offer a more mature Addams Family retelling, something that could result in competition with director Rob Zombie’s reboot of The Munsters. Rob Zombie’s Munsters reboot will see the Halloween director revisit a nostalgic favorite from his childhood. Despite Zombie being best known for his gory, R-rated horror efforts, the director will be trying his hand at more family-friendly fare with this reboot of the iconic morbid sitcom about a family of monsters.

Meanwhile, director Tim Burton’s Netflix series Wednesday will see the helmer touch on darker material than the Addams Family are used to. While the clan has always been a little macabre in their many screen incarnations, the synopsis of Burton’s Wednesday makes it clear that the series will include more mature themes than the family’s usual antics. As a result, Zombie’s Munsters reboot and Burton’s Wednesday may end up in direct competition with each other.

WednesdayBurton’s Addams Family reboot, is set to reinvent the series with a darker, more mature take on the famous family. The title character will be trying to stop a series of grisly murders according to the show’s synopsis, meaning Wednesday will be a bloodier take on the Addams Family than the earlier live-action and animated movies chronicling their misadventures. However, Zombie’s work is typically fairly mature too, meaning there is a good chance his Munsters reboot will be a similarly darker take on the original sitcom—thus reigniting the old rivalry between the franchises if Burton and Zombie’s projects end up tonally similar.

The Munsters and the Addams Family have often been compared to one another since both franchises were at the height of their popularity in the 60s. While the Addams Family is slightly darker and drier and The Munsters had a broader, goofier sense of humor, Rob Zombie’s Munsters reboot is more likely to lean into the family’s darker aspects judging by the helmer’s career thus far. Zombie has never shied away from pitch-black humor or gross-out gore, both of which are also likely to be on display in Burton’s show.

From the synopsis alone, it is clear that Burton’s show will feature at least some murder, meaning the show’s tone is bound to be darker than the live-action cartoon (and literal cartoon) style of the Addams Family movies. However, the earliest teaser for Wednesday also featured Thing alongside the titular heroine, meaning there will be disembodied limbs wandering around the Addams abode alongside the plot’s killings. As such, there is a good chance that Burton’s show will be the darkest Addams Family franchise installment so far, which makes comparisons to Zombie’s Munsters reboot inevitable. However, there is also a chance that Zombie will surprise his critics and offer a light-hearted Munsters reboot with little in the way of his trademark gallows humor and gruesome gore, in which case the project’s competition with Burton’s Addams Family reinvention Wednesday might be ameliorated.
