One of the reasons that audiences seemed to gravitate towards Deadpool earlier this year was the way it made fun of the superhero genre that it is now a part of. Even when following the now conventional post-credit scene pattern, the movie initially cracks a joke regarding audiences sitting through the credits. Still, the scene did ultimately tease the addition of Cable for Deadpool 2. Recently, Bloodline star Kyle Chandler was rumored to be an option for the studio, and with the world eager for news on what Deadpool will be doing next, the report spread fast.
There has not yet been any indication as to whether or not Chandler is still in the running for the role, but no matter who is chosen, everyone will let their opinion be heard on the casting, whether good or bad. Due to his obviously strong ties, Rob Liefeld recently addressed the rumors and the fan community.
Liefeld, the man responsible for creating Deadpool, Cable, and more comic characters, was able to express his thoughts in full in a video on Nerdy Pop. Even though he is so close to the characters, he does not feel the need to be that involved with movie. As an outsider looking in, however, he would be thrilled should Chandler get the role:
"I don't know Kyle Chandler. I don't know him. I don't know if he's ever going to play Cable, but we would be so lucky to have an actor as talented as Kyle Chandler, who has been in Martin Scorsese movies... Kyle Chandler is one of the best actors in Hollywood. People trip over themselves to work with him. If, by chance that rumor was true and the production was lucky enough to get somebody as talented as him, I would just trust in the people that gave you Deadpool to figure that out for the best.
Furthermore, Liefeld urges fans to trust the creative team involved in the sequel - which is made up of the same creators who had a hand in Deadpool - to make the right choices:
I would just say, everybody calm down. My whole thing, I would have #TrustInTim, trust in Tim Miller the fantastic director, and trust in Ryan [Reynolds] our producer and genius performer, and Simon [Kinberg], and Rhett [Reese], and Paul [Wernick]. That's what I would say."
Liefeld has constantly praised the work that Fox and the team assembled were able to do with Deadpool, and if the creator of these characters is okay with the direction they could be going, then so should fans. At the end of the day, Miller and Reynolds delivered on the promise of Deadpool and then some, so there is hardly a reason for fans to doubt their plans for the sequel. That includes casting, after they gave Reynolds a solid supporting cast.
Should Chandler wind up in the role of Cable, there is hardly a reason to think he would not be able to give a good performance. Some have wondered about his physical ability to portray the role, but Miller was quick to remind everyone that Chris Pratt wasn't the thought to be an action hero either before Guardians of the Galaxy, and now he is leading multiple franchises. Cable has the opportunity to do the same thing with a potential X-Force movie, and as long as Deadpool 2 is good, the actor should benefit as well.
Wolverine 3 opens in U.S. theaters on March 3rd, 2017, followed by unannounced X-Men films on October 6th, 2017, March 2nd, 2018, and June 29th, 2018. Deadpool 2, Gambit, New Mutants and X-Force are currently in development.
