Jake Gyllenhaal Teases Very Fun Road House Remake With Filming Update

Jake Gyllenhaal reveals his look for the Road House remake in new BTS image. Gyllenhaal leads the remake, which will be directed by Edge of Tomorrow's Doug Liman. Joining the actor in the new take on the property is a well-rounded cast that includes UFC champion Conor McGregor, Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Gbemisola Ikumelo, and Joaquim de Almeida. Gyllenhaal's character is described as a former UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a "rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys, but soon discovers that not everything is what it seems."

The original Road House was released in 1989 and starred Patrick Swayze as Dalton, a renowned bouncer hired to clean up a troubled bar in the South. Directed by Rowdy Herrington and co-starring Sam Elliot, Kelly Lynch, Ben Gazarra, and Marshall R. Teague, Road House has become a cult classic, celebrating the intense fights, macho grandstanding, and peak-form Swayze of the '80s era. A Road House sequel was made in 2006, but none of the original cast returned for the film, which was a straight-to-video dud.

In the first BTS image for the film, Gyllenhaal shares his unnamed character's look while posing with the director, who is holding a clap-board with the original Road House logo. Gyllenhaal's look is fairly modest overall, foregoing the mullet and flashy clothes that Swayze wore in the original film. Of course, this is just a first peek, so there could be many looks to his character seen throughout the film. The photo also shows off the tropical locale, as the film takes place in the Florida Keys, and may well be teasing the bar of the film, which could potentially be a beachside location. The new Road House is set to debut on Prime Video, which will make it the second streaming debut for Gyllenhaal, who starred in Antoine Fuqua's The Guilty for Netflix in 2021. The actor has been making steady strides toward bigger IP and action roles in recent years, playing Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home and a lead in Michael Bay's Ambulance. He is preparing for a number of action-heavy films after Road House, including Rob Liefeld's Prophet and Sam Hargrave's Combat Control.

It's unclear how closely the new Road House will follow the original in terms of action, tone, and style, but Gyllenhaal is certainly no stranger to getting physical for his roles and will no doubt bring something unique to the film. McGregor's involvement is also interesting, as it's his first venture into Hollywood, and it will be curious to see what part he plays in the fight choreography. Hopefully, Road House won't be a watered-down affair, as excess was the name of the game for the original; if the charm of that is missing, it will be questionable as to why they would even remake it.
