Jake Gyllenhaal gives an exciting filming update for Doug Liman's upcoming Road House remake. The upcoming Amazon Prime Video movie will reimagine the plot of the 1989 original, which starred Patrick Swayze, Ben Gazzara, Kelly Lynch, and Sam Elliott. The film was negatively received by critics upon its release but became a cult classic over the years. Initially, a remake started to develop when Ronda Rousey was attached to star with Nick Cassavetes directing. That version was scrapped and in 2021 Gyllenhaal and Liman announced that they produce their own remake.

Now, in a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote the release of Disney's Strange World, Gyllenhaal confirmed that filming on the movie has wrapped. However, he has also said that they will be doing pickups in a month, while also hinting that the film is going to be a lot of fun. Check out what he said on the remake below:

“We finished shooting… We have, actually, we’re shooting a little something… we’re doing some pickups in about a month or so… It really is so fun, though, the movie. We did finish, and the movie’s gonna be so fun…”

Everything We Know About The Road House Remake

While not much is known about the plot of the Road House remake, other than Gyllenhaal playing an ex-UFC fighter working at a Road House (likely the Double Deuce), Liman will be directing from a screenplay written by Anthony Bagarozzi, Chuck Mondry, and Sheldon Turner. Gyllenhaal will be playing a character named Dalton, which is a callback to James Dalton, whom Swayze played in the original film. Aside from Gyllenhaal, the movie will also star Daniela Melchoir, Billy Magnussen, Gbemisola Ikomelo, Lukas Gage, Arturo Castro, Beau Knapp, Joaquim de Almeida, and Connor McGregor, who will be making his feature film debut in an undisclosed role.

Development of a Road House remake began in 2013, with The Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen slated to direct and Michael Stokes writing. However, that movie never came to be, alongside the Rousey and Cassavetes project that was quietly canceled in 2016. MGM gave the remake another shot with Liman and Gyllenhaal, which became top priority for the studio after the two boarded the project. After Amazon purchased the studio in early 2022, the company announced that the remake was in production, and slated to release on Amazon Prime Video in 2023.

While many have said that a Road House remake is unnecessary, since the 1989 original is perfect as it is, a team-up of Gyllenhaal and Liman could bring about an interesting film. Liman is a highly versatile filmmaker, having directed Swingers, The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow, Jumper, Fair Game, and American Made, and could recapture the magic of the original with one of the best actors working today. After the disastrous 2006 direct-to-video sequel, a remake seems like the surest route for this property. Time will tell just how good the forthcoming Road House movie will be when it releases on Amazon Prime Video next year.
