While Rivian considers its Wall Charger the fastest way to recharge either of its two electric models at home, how much does the accessory cost? Charging an EV can be an easy or tiresome experience, depending on the level of power supplied by the charger. With gasoline cars, drivers only need to wait for a few minutes before leaving with a full tank. But EVs take much longer, a reality that fuels the hesitance of going electric. However, automakers have begun improving the charging speed of their vehicles. For example, General Motors EVs equipped with its Ultium battery technology will ship with a new heat pump designed to reduce charge times, boost driving range, and ensure better performance.

Although Rivian is a startup, its impact on the EV segment can't be ignored. Its pickup truck, the R1T, has been proven to be a versatile vehicle. In September 2022, a doctor used the R1T’s 135 kWh battery to power an operating room following an outage. That use case is similar to the Ford F-150 Lightning which is equipped to act as a backup generator. These days, EVs aren't just seen as an energy-efficient means of mobility. Instead, their capabilities are being expanded to offer newer possibilities.

The U.S. government has pledged to help build a better charging network, with the likes of Tesla and Electrify America drumming up support. While the issue of charging on the go is receiving ample attention, home charging is also a critical aspect of EV ownership. While public stations offer faster levels of charging, recharging an EV at home is more convenient. It's like plugging in a smartphone. The Rivian Wall Charger is classified as a Level 2 charger, meaning that it is rated at 240 volts. It has a maximum current of 48A and a cord length of 25 feet. Rivian's home charger currently sells for $800, comes with a complimentary 90-day return period, and supports most available electric models. A special weatherproof design allows the Wall Charger to be installed outdoors.

Rivian has partnered with popular service provider Qmerit to offer quality installation to anyone who purchases its Wall Charger. Qmerit has also collaborated with automakers like BMW and Chevrolet for Level 2 home chargers. While Qmerit is responsible for issuing a price estimate, factors like the current state of one's electrical panel and distance between the panel and the Wall Charger may influence the quote. Getting an estimate is simple and can be done by filling out a questionnaire and taking some photos.

Just as the EV segment is filled with many options, consumers also have to choose from a plethora of home chargers. Aside from what Rivian offers, Tesla also has a Wall Connector which can now support other EVs following the launch of a new variant. The ChargePoint Home Flex charger is another option that can add up to 37 miles of range per hour. However, Rivian users will be better off picking up the brand's own Wall Charger for the best results.
