Rivian has released a software update that brings a new Snow Mode to the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, but it can't be used for off-roading, according to the electric automaker. Although cars are built to withstand the rigors of all seasons, customers are encouraged to purchase certain accessories meant for the appropriate weather. For example, Tesla sells winter tires that enable its EVs to maintain control when traveling on roads covered by snow and ice. These tires offer improved handling and traction in cold weather.

Rivian’s latest software update brings a timely feature called Snow Mode which offers a safer driving experience in wintry weather. But there is a catch. The mode can only be used for on-road driving. For off-roading, Rivian directs drivers to initiate the Off-Road All-Terrain Drive Mode which is designed for adventures off the highway. Meanwhile, Rivian clarifies that its All-Purpose Drive Mode and 20-inch All-Terrain tires can still be used while driving on snow-covered roads. However, the Snow Mode offers the best experience.

Once the Snow Mode is engaged, the R1S and R1T EVs become capable of tackling snowy, slushy, and icy on-road driving, on both city roads and highways. By relaxing the accelerator pedal response, the feature offers smoother and more measured acceleration and deceleration. It also avoids slip and wheel lock during deceleration when drivers engage the new 'Low' default brake regeneration setting. Additionally, it brings a more stable transition to the EVs’ auto-hold functionality that ensures steadier stops on slippery roads. Rivian EVs are also capable of suggesting when the driver should switch to Snow Mode if they perceive wheel slip when outdoor temperatures are 34° F and below.

Rivian includes new functions within its mobile app that enables drivers to build on the Snow Mode’s capabilities. For example, drivers can now pre-heat their EVs’ cabins before or after a drive in cold weather. Through the smartphone app, drivers can also remotely defrost or de-ice the windows and mirrors. The steering wheel and seats can also be heated using the app's new feature.

Meanwhile, the software update also extends to the infotainment section. Rivian owners with U.S.-based Spotify Premium accounts can now access audiobooks. They can even add songs to a queue and take a look at the queue to know which track is next. Rivian’s newest system upgrade also fixes bugs like the center and driver displays flashing white during start-up, the voice navigation unmuting itself, and a password being needed for an open Wi-Fi network.
