Riverdale season 7 finally has its first official trailer, revealing more details of the 1950s setting. The series will end with this new season, which premieres on The CW on March 29. Season 1 premiered in 2017, introducing darker versions of the iconic characters Archie (KJ Apa), Jughead (Cole Sprouse), Betty (Lili Reinhart), and Veronica (Camila Mendes), among others. Over the years, the show has become known for its massive twists and turns, including a drug called jingle jangle, a serial killer, a cult, several musical episodes, and Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) developing supernatural powers.

The CW unveiled the trailer for Riverdale season 7, digging deep into the time warp mayhem that kicked off with the season 6 finale's cliffhanger ending.

The trailer, which follows Jughead attempting to get his friends to believe him that they are all from the future, showcases a huge shift in character dynamics from the modern day. This includes the fact that Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) is dating Betty, Veronica is a Hollywood star who has just arrived in town, and Archie is engaged to Cheryl Blossom.

Why Riverdale Season 7 is Set in the 1950s

The reason that Archie and the gang have now been thrust back into the 1950s is the fallout of the Riverdale season 6 finale. That episode, which saw the characters facing doom when a comet was heading straight for Riverdale, ended with Cheryl using her powers to stop its descent. However, a ripple effect of this was the time warp, which also erased the memories of everybody but Jughead, for reasons that will likely be explored in season 7.

However, a big out-of-universe reason for this time warp is that Riverdale is doubling down on its original mission statement. Part of the reason the show was so popular was that it subverted the tropes of the original Archie comics and their iconic characters. By placing these new versions of the characters in a time period that is more fitting to the source material, that contrast will become even stronger.

As the season 7 trailer shows, the darkness of Riverdale's common storylines will come creeping back into these newly "wholesome" characters' lives. In addition to Kevin exploring his sexuality and Archie being tied up by a violent assailant, the new season's theme will still skew majorly away from the original comics. In that way, the show will end as it began, asserting its edgy uniqueness in the face of its polished and family-friendly source material.
