The trailer for Riverdale season 6 reveals the appearance of Sabrina as well as teasing a possible pregnancy plotline. Riverdale season 5 saw a major change to the series, which after the first four episodes (that were originally part of season 4 before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down production on the series), the show jumped forward five years later to show what happened to Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and Jughead Jones. Season 5 ended with the reveal that Cheryl Blossom's ancestors were burned at the stake and set a curse on various Riverdale residents.
This witchcraft lineage of the Blossom family was first hinted at in the series, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which was a spin-off series of Riverdale that was originally set up at The CW before being produced by Netflix. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ran on Netflix from October 2018 to December 2020 for four seasons. Now, with the witch plotline brought to the forefront, series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa revealed that Sabrina Spellman would appear in Riverdale season 6 with Kiernan Shipka reprising her role. Given that Sabrina Spellman died at the end of her series, many are likely to tune in to find out how the teenage witch was able to return and if this takes place after the events of that series or before that final episode.
Riverdale revealed an official trailer for season 6, which showcases the first look at Shipka's Sabrina as she encounters Cheryl Blossom. It also hints at furthering the romantic subplot of Archie and Betty, with the two appearing to have discussions about having a baby. The trailer ends revealing the title of the five-episode event, Rivervale which is set to premiere on November 16, 2021. Watch the full trailer below:
A staple of the Archie comics series was the love triangle between Betty, Archie, and Veronica. Riverdale's first four seasons paired Archie and Veronica as a couple while Betty was with Jughead. Betty and Archie grew closer in season 5, starting a romantic relationship. Due to the time jump and the two being young adults now, potentially adding a child to the series could change some of the group dynamics and open up a new angle of story opportunities. With many of the actors playing the series' parental figures, like Mark Consuelos, leaving the series, it could be time for them to step into the parental roles.
Sabrina Spellman appearing in the upcoming season of Riverdale is part of a larger trend The CW is adopting for many of their series returning before the end of the year. Legends of Tomorrow is bringing back past Legends like Captain Cold, Hawkman, and Firestorm, while the upcoming season of The Flash will begin with a five-episode story that unites various heroes like Black Lightning, Batwoman, and The Atom together in a crossover event. Both The Flash and Riverdale's five-episode events will be premiere on the same night and air through the following weeks on Tuesday nights on The CW.
