Riverdale‘s showrunner has praised the long-awaited crossover episode with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, saying that it’s "amazing." Beginning with a seven-year jump to the future, Riverdale season 5 saw more significant shifts in its finale. Tensions between Archie (KJ Apa) and Hiram (Mark Consuelos) reached a boiling point, as Hiram planted a bomb in Archie’s home with the hopes of getting rid of his longtime nemesis. Although both Archie and Betty survive, as the trailer for Riverdale season 6 makes clear, Hiram’s last act of revenge is bound to have lingering effects on those closest to him.

Along with its trademark relationship drama, and a possible pregnancy for Betty (Lili Reinhart), the trailer ended with the reveal of Kiernan Shipka reprising her role as Sabrina Spellman from Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. A smiling Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) addresses Sabrina, joking to the witch about “what the black cat dragged in.” Sabrina then turns to face Cheryl, showing a big smile of her own. The tease led to plenty of fan speculation, given how the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina series concluded and how long viewers have wanted Shipka to appear on Riverdale. Naturally, it left viewers curious to know more about how the crossover happens.

To promote Riverdale season 6, which premieres on The CW with a five-episode event on Tuesday, November 16, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spoke with TVLineAguirre-Sacasa shed light on the upcoming Riverdale event, and explained its horror influences, which will vary depending on the episode. As it related to Sabrina’s Riverdale debut, the showrunner said that the crossover will happen during episode 4. Aguirre-Sacasa also had a lot of praise for the chemistry between Shipka and Petsch. Read his quote below.

“The episode she’s in is amazing... It’s a very Cheryl/Madelaine [Petsch]-heavy episode. They had such an amazing rapport, and it felt so natural… It felt both like [it was] worth the wait, and ‘Why didn’t we do this sooner?’”

It has long between established that Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina exist in the same universe, along with the short-lived spinoff Katy Keene. In the past, all three shows have contained references to one another, with minor and supporting characters appearing in cameos and small guest roles. Still, in spite of the fact that Aguirre-Sacasa has always noted his openness to a full-fledged crossover (even planning a story called "The Witch War" at one point), Shipka is dropping into Riverdale many seasons after the teen drama established itself.

Questions remain about how Shipka’s character will factor into Riverdale season 6. Theories have suggested that the use of aliens could pave the way for Sabrina to appear. Others have argued that her involvement could be facilitated more simply by relying on already-established magical lore. It remains to be seen which route the writers decide to take and whether Shipka will ultimately make more recurring appearances, but fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out.
