New artwork shows that Archie might die in Riverdale season 5The CW teen drama first aired in 2017 and is a live-action adaptation of characters in the Archie Comics. The show focuses on the adventures of a group of teenagers living in the town of Riverdale, who include Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and Jughead Jones.

When the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the United States, Riverdale was among the many TV shows that were impacted. Although Riverdale was in the middle of production for season 4, the show was forced to amend its original plans; while the final few season 4 episodes were supposed to include prom and graduation, "Killing Mr. Honey" became the season finale instead. As a result, season 5 will pick up where season 4 left off, before making a seven-year time jump into the future.

Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre Sacasa hinted on Twitter that Archie may meet an untimely demise. He shared two images in a tweet announcing new season 5 table reads, with the one on the right depicting three characters - likely Betty, Veronica, and Jughead - at a graveyard. Archie's face is superimposed in the background while wearing a military helmet, which might imply both his involvement in the army and his death in season 5. You can check out Sacasa's tweet below:

Sacasa's tweet also featured an image of the Riverdale gang at their high school graduation with the artwork style of the Archie comics. The caption for Sacasa's tweet announces that the cast and crew of Riverdale are saying "goodbye to high school and hello to...???" Although this is as cryptic of a statement as ever, especially when accompanied by a series of emojis that include a tornado, a camera, a spider, and a skull and crossbones, it certainly showcases the crazy twists and turns Riverdale fans now expect from the show. While the gang's high school graduation will undoubtedly be one to remember, one can't help but wonder if at least some of Sacasa's emojis will tie into this event as well.

Even though the Riverdale storylines are an undeniable roller coaster, viewers have come to enjoy the many epic highs and lows of the show. While Archie's death would certainly be an ultimate low, coming back from the dead certainly wouldn't be the oddest thing to happen on this show. Regardless of what happens, Riverdale has shown that just about anything is fair game, and fans can only guess at what season 5 will bring.
