Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa revealed that Betty and Archie’s romantic relationship is far from over. The CW’s hottest teen soap started its fifth season at the beginning of the year before breaking for a hiatus in the spring. The series stars K.J. Apa, Camila Mendes, Lili Reinhart, Cole Sprouse, and more.

Riverdale, the steamy teen soap adapted from the classic Archie Comics, has thrown fans curve balls since the series began. Most recently, one of the many exciting twists was the seven-year time jump that showed an estrangement between the two staple couples: Archie/Veronica and Betty/Jughead. After the time jump, Betty and Archie briefly rekindled their often teased romantic tension. At the same time, Jughead had split from Betty before college, and Veronica had gotten married to a Wall Street hotshot. However, Betty and Archie’s romance was short-lived and, thus, superficial, as Archie realized he still has deeper feelings for Veronica

However, TVLine reports, Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa revealed that Betty and Archie’s relationship is far from over. Aguirre-Sacasa responded to a fan question that wondered about the nature of the characters’ relationship. Though Aguirre-Sacasa referred to it at the start as more than a “booty call,” the last it left off, Archie had used those exact words to describe it. Aguirre-Sacasa ensures that their relationship will deepen further in the coming episodes. Read his response below:

“LOL. That’s fair. But I will add: Betty and Archie’s story isn’t over yet, and their relationship does deepen, especially as we enter the last stretch of episodes.”

Though the two OG best friends seem to always come back to each other, it’s never entirely clear in what way. While both Betty and Archie were in committed relationships with their other partners throughout high school, they did have a few dalliances, making their status always pending. Although now, their pending status may not be such a problem considering their former (and…somewhat current?) flames also have their own relationships to deal with. Veronica is attempting to divorce her overbearing husband Chad, though it seems it may take more effort to get him to let go. Meanwhile, Jughead, seemingly left in the lurch from his relationship with Betty, has a blossoming new relationship with Pop Tate’s granddaughter Tabitha Tate.

This news is sure to add fuel to the flames of the longstanding audience rivalry between fans who are rooting for Veronica and Archie or those who hope Betty and Archie end up together. While the Archie/Veronica romance has had most of the series to grow closer, it might be Betty's turn to have the limelight. Whatever the outcome, fans won’t have to wait long as Riverdale season 5 continues on August 11.
