Riverdale Season 3 Synopsis: Archie Might Be Going to Prison

The synopsis for the Riverdale season 3 premiere episode, "Labor Day", reveals that Archie's murder trial will reach its conclusion when The CW TV series returns. Meanwhile, it seems that trouble is once again brewing behind closed doors at the Cooper household.

Since it premiered early last year, The CW's dark and soapy Archie Comics TV show has pitted it heroes against a pair of mysterious killers, a dangerous gang of drug-dealing bikers and more corrupt city officials than you can shake a stick at. However, all that took place over the course of a single year in the lives of Archie Andrews and his schoolmates, with nary a time jump to help cover more ground. That will change with season 3, when Riverdale picks up in real time - following a dramatic conclusion to season 2 that saw Betty's dad Hal Cooper revealed as the Black Hood and Archie framed for murder by Veronica's own father, Hiram Lodge.

The Riverdale trailer that debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in July confirmed that the season 3 premiere will take place around the titular holiday, at the beginning of the new school year. However, it didn't really clarify whether or not Archie's trial had already been concluded by the point in time. According to The CW's official "Labor Day" synopsis (see below), Archie will - indeed - still be in danger of going to prison when the show resumes next month.

AND THE VERDICT IS... As the jury begins deliberations in his murder trial, Archie (KJ Apa) makes a surprising request about how he wants to spend his final days of summer. Betty (Lili Reinhart) is forced to deal with her problems head-on after a heated confrontation with Alice (Madchen Amick) and Polly (guest star Tiera Skovbye) brings up some dark secrets she’s kept hidden.

Veronica (Camila Mendes) pleads with Hiram (Mark Consuelos) to step in and help Archie before a verdict is announced. Finally, Jughead (Cole Sprouse) leads the Serpents against the Ghoulies latest attack.

Madelaine Petsch, Marisol Nichols, Luke Perry, Ashleigh Murray, Skeet Ulrich, Casey Cott, Charles Melton and Vanessa Morgan also star.

In a recent interview with EW, Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa further confirmed that "the outcome of [Archie's] trial will be revealed" by the end of the season 3 premiere episode. "Labor Day" will also include a special guest star appearance by Penelope Ann Miller as Ms. Wright, the attorney leading the town case against Archie.

However things work out for Archie, his friends will have problems of their own to worry about in the meantime. As the "Labor Day" synopsis notes, Jughead and the rest of the Southside Serpents will have their hands full dealing with their rivals the Ghoulies. At the same time, Betty and her mom Alice will learn the truth about The Farm - the place where Betty's sister Polly went to take care of her twins in season 2. As it turns out, The Farm is actually run by a cult led by Edgar Evernever and his daughter, Evelyn Evernever, from the Archie Comics... and they're all too eager to indoctrinate Betty and Alice to their ranks.

As though that wasn't enough, the Riverdale season 3 trailer confirmed that The Town With Pep will soon be beset by a series of ritualistic crimes that - as Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed to EW - were inspired by True Detective season 1 and set the stage for a Breakfast Club-inspired flashback episode that explores what life was like when the adults of Riverdale were teenagers themselves... around the same time that identical ritualistic killings were taking place.

Suffice it to say: it sounds like Archie and his friends are in for yet another wild, wild year of high school.
