Riverdale looks set to welcome a new villain for season 2 after Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa teased a new character on Twitter. The writer posted a children's crayon drawing depicting Jason and Cheryl Bloom with an ominous figure called the Sugar Man leering over them. Aguirre-Sacasa captioned the picture "lock your doors, Riverdale, the Sugar Man is coming," which could mean the series is finally getting a little supernatural.

The writer, executive producer and Chief Creative Officer of Archie Comics is famous for his Afterlife with Archie series - that followed the titular character during a zombie apocalypse - and the spinoff Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, so fans have been hoping for a horror element to be added to the TV show.

The comics does not feature a character called the Sugar Man so it seems to be someone, or something, introduced especially for the new season which is expected to be more of a thriller. The sinister figure clearly has ties to the Blossom family, who were the center of the murder mystery of season one with the death of Jason, so it seems that season 2 will continue to reveal more details about their rich and dysfunctional lives.

Riverdale season 2 is currently filming with KJ Apa, Cole Sprouse, Camila Mendes, Lili Reinhart and Madelaine Putsch all returning as Archie, Jughead, Veronica, Betty and Cheryl. New cast members include Vanessa Morgan as Toni Topaz, a character from the comic book who is going to stir up some trouble in Betty and Jughead's relationship while an ex of Veronica's may well do the same for her and Archie's fledgling romance. Graham Phillips has been cast as Nick St. Clair, an over privileged rich boy from New York who arrives in Riverdale as "a wolf in sheep's clothing."

The Sugar Man tease certainly hints at an even darker turn for the hit series following the reveal of who murdered Jason Blossom, and with season two arriving in October it may well be for a special Halloween episode. We could see the eerie character stalking Cheryl and her mother Penelope, but whether he's supernatural is another story, but one with quite the opportunity. If the Sugar Man is actually something paranormal then it could also lead the way towards introducing to Sabrina to Riverdale. Fans have long been wanting to see the teenage witch magically appear in Riverdale from her town across Sweetwater River, Greendale, and we've already seen her alluded to in season 1.

When Jughead's dad is in jail he can be seen holding a copy of issue 1 of Chilling Adventures In Sorcery, which Sabrina narrates, and Aguirre-Sacasa said it was within the realm of possibility that she could appear. Maybe to battle the Sugar Man? We'll have to wait until October 11th to find out.
