Riverdale season 2 will have a "new looming threat" showing up in town. Against all odds too, the CW series - based on the long-running Archie comics - went from what was originally an unexpected comic book adaptation to being one of this year's most critically-acclaimed new TV shows. By taking the characters, settings, and iconic relationships at the heart of the Archie comics, Riverdale added different tonal and aesthetic influences into its story, that kept it from being just another CW teen drama. Instead, it was equal parts pulpy mystery, romance, thriller, noir, and horror show, with key inspirations taken from David Lynch's beloved Twin Peaks.

The series also featured some surprisingly dark character turns and backstories, that were completely absent from the original source material. But while Madchen Amick's Alice Cooper - the obsessive, overprotective mother of Lili Reinhart's Betty Cooper - may have started the season out as nothing more than a clear-cut villain in the series, she quickly emerged as a fan-favorite character by the time it was over.

While Amick is currently busy promoting the return season of Showtime's Twin Peaks too - where she reprises her iconic role of Shelly Johnson - the actress has also been busy preparing for Riverdale's second season along with the rest of her cast members. And during a recent interview with Collider, Amick was asked what she knew about the new season and what directions it's going to be taking Alice and the rest of the main characters in:

"Yeah, I know a lot of really good paths that we’re all gonna take, and it’s exciting. I’m impressed that the writers come up with these trajectories for the characters and families, and how they intertwine. From what I’ve heard about Season 2, it just sounds like it’s gonna be an even better season than the first one. There’s a new looming threat that’s gonna be showing up in Riverdale for Season 2 that I think you’re gonna really enjoy."

This may not come as much of a surprise to most Riverdale fans, or really anyone who watched through to the season finale. Not only did the penultimate episode of season 1 finally reveal the truth behind who killed Jason Blossom, the finale threw one of the good guy characters into a possibly fatal situation, and also signaled the introduction of multiple new characters and groups that weren't present in the first season of the show.

However, not much has been officially revealed or announced about who the new villains will be in the season. Veronica's father, Hiram, promises to be a character of serious power and ill-intent when he arrives, but there's no telling if he's who Amick is referring to or not. So, in case the prospect of Hiram's influence in the town and the possible breakup of Jughead and Betty wasn't already enough, fans now have another new villain they can start speculating and theorizing about. But fortunately, fans only have a few more months to wait until Riverdale returns with its second season, when hopefully, some of these questions will be answered.

Riverdale returns on Wednesday, October 11 on The CW.
