New Riverdale images announce Molly Ringwald's arrival as Archie's mother, Mary Andrews. The series has become a big hit for The CW, quickly developing a devoted fanbase. Based on Archie Comics, Riverdale has Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa as showrunner, Archie Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer and the writer of Afterlife With Archie, the zombie Archie Comics spinoff, Plus, the series boasts a strong cast including Cole Sprouse, Lilli Reinhart, K.J. Apa, and Luke Perry, to name but a few. Such is its popularity that it's already been renewed for a second season before the first has fully aired.
Riverdale has managed to deliver highly entertaining teen drama with a twist - the twist being that a murder has taken place in the small town of Riverdale, and no one knows who did it. The list of potential suspects is huge, and seemingly not getting narrowed down, either, though apparently viewers will know who killed Jason Blossom by the end of season 1, ahead of a 'big genre twist' for season 2.
But Riverdale is full of other plotlines, too, and in the tenth episode of the current run, titled 'The Lost Weekend,' we finally get to met Archie's mom, who has been estranged from his dad, Fred Andrews for the last two years. Mary Andrews is set to be played by '80s icon and star of The Breakfast Club, Molly Ringwald. New stills released show Mary Andrews' arrival, along with other key moments from the episode. The official synopsis for the episode reads as follows:
When Fred (Luke Perry) decides to finalize the divorce with Archie’s mother Mary (guest star Molly Ringwald), Archie (KJ Apa) hides his true feelings. Archie tries to win Valerie (guest star Hayley Law) back with a romantic evening, however, Betty (Lili Reinhart) hijacks his plans when she decides to throw Jughead (Cole Sprouse) a surprise birthday party. Once Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) learns of the party, she decides to make it interesting and things quickly get out of control. Meanwhile, Veronica (Camila Mendes) contemplates whether she should participate in the deposition to help get her Dad released.
The images of Ringwald don't really reveal all that much, though we can probably expect some angst from Archie both over her reappearance and the imminent divorce of his parents. Jughead is still living with Archie, we assume from the stills, and it also looks as though the Archie/ Veronica pairing is heating up, so maybe he doesn't manage to win Valerie back after all. As for Alice Cooper, it's always hard to figure out what she's up to; she's hardly the most stable or reliable of characters, and the picture of her with a pair of binoculars can surely mean nothing but trouble.
Riverdale airs Thursdays at 9pm ET on The CW.
