A new Riverdale image offers fans a look at the Southside Serpents and one of the newest characters to join the second season of the hit show, Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan). After the Southside Serpents did everything from help Hiram Lodge in his shady real estate dealings to try to help Jason and Polly Cooper, it looks as if fans haven't seen the last of the notorious collection of domestic criminals.
The slippery gang will be making an even bigger impact in the second season of the CW show with Jughead (Cole Sprouse) learning about his father's legacy, and Toni's the one to show him.
The official Archie Comics Twitter shared an official image of Morgan and her fellow serpents. Take a look at the image below:
Toni's first appearance involved her commenting on Chuck Clayton's post with Veronica Lodge. Her only response to Clayton's comment was, "No gracias," hinting that she might be latino. According to showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Toni will be Jughead's guide into the serpent world and his father's legacy. She and him share a number of common interests and according to Aguirre-Sacasa, it's almost as if she's a "female Jughead," which could spell trouble for the budding relationship between Jughead and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart). She'll also be Riverdale's first openly bisexual character, showcasing more representation for the beloved show.
In the comics, Toni Topaz is considerably different with short pink hair and a fondness for eating burgers, something she and Jughead might still share in common on the show. Topaz's backstory and motives remain a mystery in the second season, but she looks prepared to unseat any and all competition. Morgan's other credits include The Shannara Chronicles, and Degrassi: The Next Generation proving she has what it takes to be a major player both in an adaptation and in a teen drama.
While the promise of a rival for Jughead Jones is a worrisome thought for many fans, Toni's plotline looks ready to explore loyalty, history, and legacy, something that the show has done in spades. After FP Jones was incarcerated, the Serpents inducted Jughead into the gang in memory of his father. While the legacies of the Andrews and the Cooper clans have been explored, it will be interesting to pursue more of the Jughead portions of Riverdale. That's worth a little trouble and the Southside Serpents look ready to slide right in and cause it.
Riverdale season 2 premieres Wednesday October 11 at 8pm on The CW.
