The story for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker always involved Rey destroying Kylo Ren's TIE Fighter, but originally the scene took place on Coruscant. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker marked the end of the Skywalker saga, but it wasn't the ending that a lot of people were hoping for. The third film in Disney's Star Wars sequel trilogy got mixed reviews, mostly due to what seemed like an attempt to retcon story points that Rian Johnson set up in Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017.
Originally, Colin Trevorrow was set to be the director of the final film in the sequel trilogy, but Disney and Trevorrow parted ways in 2017 over creative differences. Trevorrow's film was called Star Wars: Duel of the Fates and was much different than what Disney decided to release. For one, Coruscant was intended to be the base of operations for the First Order. Disney stuck with the idea of including Coruscant after Trevorrow's departure, with previous reports revealing that they originally had Palpatine hiding out on Coruscant underneath the Jedi Temple. Concept art for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker also features Kylo Ren battling space wolves, which further revealed the extent to which the abandoned planet played a role in the movie.
Now, new concept art from Adam Brockbank shows that another key scene of the movie took place on Coruscant. One of the more memorable scenes in the film comes when Kylo Ren chases down Rey in his TIE Fighter before Rey slices a wing off of the ship. The scene takes place on the planet Pasaana, but it originally was Coruscant. Brockbank's concept art can be seen below:
As mentioned above, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker received mixed reviews upon release. Despite some agreeing that the film suffered when it came to story, most will agree that the film excelled in special effects. Like the previous two films in the sequel trilogy, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was nominated for the Best Achievement in Visual Effects Oscar, and scenes like this TIE Fighter action are partly why. However, while being visually stunning, critics will point out that Kylo Ren could have just shot Rey with the ship's laser canons just as easily as Rey could have pulled the TIE Fighter out of the sky using the Force.
Regardless of fans' opinion on the direction Disney took with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the events of the film are now canon. The Mandalorian has dropped hints at explaining certain plot points of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but there are some elements of the film that will be hard for the show to change. The planet this specific scene took place on may seem like an irreverent detail. However, having Rey cut down Kylo's TIE Fighter on Coruscant means that the final battle would have also taken place on the planet, which for many, would have seemed like a more logical place than Exegol.
