Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker saw Rey and Kylo Ren forming a Force dyad, but with Kylo’s death, what happens to the dyad he had with Rey? Each trilogy in the Star Wars saga has introduced new characters, events, and concepts, of which some have been further explored in other media. The Star Wars sequel trilogy introduced many new concepts, among those the Force dyad, which made its first appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens before being fully explored in the final entry of the trilogy.

The sequel trilogy introduced a new generation of heroes and villains and brought back various characters from the original movies, with the connecting link between all movies being Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). The legendary villain made a comeback in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker where it was revealed that he had clones, which allowed him to return after his supposed death in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. When confronting the Emperor, Rey and Kylo Ren/Ben Solo (along with viewers) learned that their bond was so strong they formed a Force dyad, which Palpatine used to rejuvenate himself for a couple of minutes as he realized they were a prophesied dyad he could take advantage of.

A dyad in the Force is a phenomenon that occurs when two Force-sensitive individuals share a unique bond in the Force, which connects their minds across space and time. Rey and Kylo’s Force dyad was teased in Star Wars: The Force Awakens when Kylo subjected Rey to a mind probe and she reversed it, discovering more about him and learning a lot about the Force as well. This connection is what made it possible for Rey and Kylo to communicate from across the galaxy in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, as even though they were physically apart, they were one in the Force. Those in a dyad possess some rare Force powers as well, such as Force healing, also seen in The Rise of Skywalker when Rey healed a vexis and later Kylo after she impaled him with his own lightsaber.

Star Wars dyad explained canon

However, by the end of The Rise of Skywalker, Kylo Ren – now Ben Solo as he redeemed himself as his grandfather did in the original trilogy – died after the Emperor was defeated and the former Knight of Ren used the Force to revive Rey. With Ben Solo’s death, Rey can’t technically be a dyad anymore, even if she can still communicate/sense Ben’s presence after he became one with the Force (the novelization Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: Expanded Edition explains Ben called out to Rey moments after becoming one with the Force, assuring her that he would always be with her). Other Star Wars media have done their best to expand the concept of the Force dyad, explaining it’s a natural phenomenon that began to manifest when Ben surrendered to the dark side, and at the same time, Rey was also beginning to develop that bond.

After Ben Solo’s death, then, Rey wouldn’t be part of a Force dyad anymore as the other half of it is no longer around, even if he became one with the Force. However, as the Star Wars universe continues expanding and with that changing and adding more elements to its mythology, it wouldn’t be surprising if another Force-sensitive being powerful enough to be on a par with Rey and Ben Solo/Kylo Ren suddenly appeared, making it possible for Rey to create a new Force dyad with a new character.
