Esteemed actor Mark Hamill takes Luke's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker scene very seriously in behind-the-scenes images. Hamill is best known for his role as Luke Skywalker in all six out of the nine Star Wars films. Even though Luke sacrifices himself in The Last Jedihe did return briefly for one epic scene in The Rise of Skywalker.

The Skywalker Saga came to a close last December with the ninth film in the galactic franchise. The Rise of Skywalker saw Rey discover that she is a Palpatine and the Resistance faced the evil Emperor and the First Order one final time in an epic battle. Before Rey ultimately defeats Palpatine, she returns to Ahch-To, determined to keep herself in exile lest she succumb to her evil bloodline. Luke appears to her as a Force Ghost and admits to her that he and Leia sensed all along that she was a Palpatine, but they still believed in her. Ultimately, Luke provides the impetus Rey desperately needs to face Palpatine and restore balance to the Force.

It's fascinating to see how the real location and the blue screens mesh, but Hamill firmly stays in character even with the production crew nearby. Although consensus regarding the final film in the Skywalker Saga remains mixed months after it premiered, fans agreed that the movie did do Luke justice. Mark Hamill's portrayal of Luke has reached legendary status in film lore, and his ascendance to a Force Ghost is an excellent way to allow his story to come full circle. Although there was another scene in The Rise of Skywalker that featured Luke sparring with Leia when they were younger, Luke's scene where he speaks to Rey was by far the most impactful of the two segments because it helped move the plot forward.

The fate of future Star Wars films remains unclear. However fans and critics may feel about the nine movies, one thing's for certain: Star Wars remains popular in spite of a the divide because the characters are so dynamic and easy to root for. Not many franchises have a hero who fans can say they've followed since his first appearance in 1977. Luke grew from a naive boy who wanted to go on an adventure into a fully-fledged Jedi Knight. Watching his hero's journey come to an end in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is bittersweet but incredibly fulfilling. Mark Hamill has accomplished the feat of remaining a fan favorite in spite of what audiences may think of the actual films themselves. It's a testament to his acting ability and the strength of character in the Star Wars universe. After all, the stories may happen in a galaxy far, far away, but everyone can relate to a kid who just wanted to save the universe.
