Kylo Ren killed members of a never-before-seen cult in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but the victims from Mustafar have a compelling background that the movie hardly touched on. Adam Driver reprised his role as the leading member of the First Order for the ninth and final installment of Star Wars' Skywalker saga. After becoming Supreme Leader Snoke's successor, Kylo Ren attempted to find an artifact that would lead him to Emperor Palpatine's location. His search took him to Mustafar, a significant lava planet in franchise canon.

The molten hellscape of a planet would be recognizable to viewers considering it was the location of the pivotal duel between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequels. The planet was once a lush garden planet fed by the Bright Star artifact. When a Force-sensitive woman named Lady Corvax tried to use the artifact to resurrect her husband, Mustafar's orbit shifted. Nearby gas giants heated the planet, decimating the species who called Mustafar home. The curse brought on by Lady Corvax attracted ancient Sith to the planet in search of secrets of eternal life. In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, it was revealed Darth Vader called Mustafar home, building a temple on the planet's volcanic land.

For Kylo Ren to locate Emperor Palpatine, he needed the Sith Wayfinder. The Rise of Skywalker's opening scene focused on the Supreme Leader and a team of stormtroopers when they arrived on Mustafar to find the Wayfinder previously owned by Vader. Upon arriving at the location of his grandfather's old temple, Kylo Ren was met by the Alazmec of Winsit. The cult colonists refused to bow to the Supreme Leader and instead claimed they would only honor the Dark Lord. In possession of the Sith Wayfinder, Kylo Ren and his stormtroopers slaughter the Alazmec to obtain the useful object. The cult didn't have a major presence in The Rise of Skywalker, but tie-in material provided more insight into their motives.

What Has Been Revealed About The Alazmec Of Winsit In Star Wars Canon

Star Wars

According to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary, the Alazmec of Winsit were one of the Sith sects who pilgrimaged to Mustafar in the hope of tapping into Vader's legendary power. The Alazmec were also said to be drawn to the Corvax Fen, a forested bog thought to be soaked by the tears of Lady Corvax. Not only did the cult protect the ruins of Fortress Vader, but they subsequently guarded the grove as they believed the fertile soil of Corvax Fen would restore Mustafar to its original state. The cult colonists even planted irontrees to replenish the planet's ecosystem, which could be seen in The Rise of Skywalker.

The Alazmec arrived on Mustafar following the Dark Lord's demise, emerging as one of the more dangerous Sith cults to call the planet home. At some point, they got hold of the Sith Wayfinder that was once owned by "the true father and ruler of the galaxy." Kylo Ren's massacre of the Alazmec seemingly wiped the cult out of existence. In doing so, it was unclear if another cult took over as the protectors of Corvax Fen now that Mustafar was coming back to life. With the fate of the planet left unknown by the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, it will be interesting to see if Mustafar appears in future projects and what condition it will be in following the death of the Alazmec.
