Actor Tom Felton is the latest addition the impressive roster of performers onboard to star in Rise of the Apes, a prequel to the sci-fi classic Planet of the Apes from 20th Century Fox.
You can read the official plot synopsis for the film below:
'Rise of the Apes' is an origin story in the truest sense of the term. Set in present day San Francisco, the film is a reality-based cautionary tale, a science fiction/science fact blend, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.
Felton will appear in Rise of the Apes as the co-owner of an ape facility which is run by his cruel father (acclaimed villain actor Brian Cox). Opposite the two will be a group of scientists whose ranks include a primatologist (Freida Pinto) and a father and son duo (John Lithgow and James Franco, respectively) whose work with an ape named Caesar (mo-cap specialist Andy Serkis) has unforeseen consequences that affect the future of the entire human race.
After eight Harry Potter movies, it is probably a safe bet to say that Felton has the whole "nasty offspring of a bad guy" role down pat. One only hopes his character in the Planet of the Apes prequel doesn't bear too much of a resemblance to Draco Malfoy (see below), if only so that Felton can show off some more of his range as an actor.
Rise of the Apes has managed to snag itself a respectable crew of actors, which will certainly help ease the concerns of moviegoers that see the film as an iffy proposition. Combine that with the fact that Weta Digital of Avatar fame is handling the FX - which will include photo-realistic simians for the first time in the history of the Apes franchise - and this is one prequel that could actually be pretty good.
We all know what the really big question at this point is - how long until 20th Century Fox officials announces that the prequel will be filmed in or converted to 3D?
Rise of the Apes is scheduled to arrive in theaters in the U.S. on June 24th, 2011.
