New 'Rio' Trailer & Poster

new trailer for April's animated film Rio

Animated films have always been big at the box office. Disney used to have the market cornered with its animated offerings, but in the last ten to fifteen years  other studios have gotten in on the act and started producing  feature length cartoons - with varying amounts of success.

One animated feature that  is on the radar for next year is Rio, a 3D offering with an A-list voice cast including Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg. A new trailer for the film has been released and it looks... er colorful.

Rio comes from Ice Age helmer Carlos Saldanha (it's apparently a "dream project" for the director) and it follows the adventures of two rare macaws as they try to survive in Rio after a failed kidnapping. The first trailer was released back in May and the official synopsis reads as follows:

"RIO is a 3-D animation feature from the makers of the “Ice Age” films. Set in the magnificent city of Rio de Janeiro and the lush rainforest of Brazil, the comedy-adventure centers on Blu, a rare macaw who thinks he is the last of his kind. When Blu discovers there’s another – and that she’s a she – he leaves the comforts of his cage in small town Minnesota and heads to Rio. But it’s far from love at first sight between the domesticated and flight-challenged Blu and the fiercely independent, high-flying female, Jewel. Unexpectedly thrown together, they embark on an adventure of a lifetime, where they learn about friendship, love, courage, and being open to life’s many wonders. RIO brings together a menagerie of vivid characters, a heart-warming story, colorful backdrops, energizing Latin and contemporary music, and family-friendly song and dance."

Parents expecting Pixar-style storytelling will more than likely be disappointed, as the film looks like it plays mainly towards kids - but at the very least, adults can content themselves with playing "spot the celebrity voice" as the film also includes the vocal talents of George Lopez, Jemaine Clement, Tracy Morgan, Leslie Mann,, and Jamie Foxx.

With a release date of April 8th, 2011, Rio is sure to keep the "lil uns" happy until Pixar's Cars 2 hits in June. By that time Hathaway could be an Oscar-winning actress for Love and Other Drugs (although she will more than likely have to be satisfied with being 2011 Oscars co-host), while Eisenberg is also gaining some Academy Award heat following his turn in The Social Network - not that this will be of any interest to the core audience of Rio. It's just something to note.

Screen Rant will keep you updated on all Rio news, as its release date approaches.
