Showrunner Akiva Goldsman has announced that veteran television director Alan Taylor will helm the pilot episode of Amazon's Ringworld adaptation. The show is based on author Larry Niven's classic novel of the same name, which sees protagonist Louis Wu and a motley crew travel to the titular rotating space station. Ringworld is one of three literary properties that Amazon announced it would be producing for its streaming service in 2017, the other two being Lazarus and Snow Crash.

Goldman revealed the news in a wide-ranging video interview with Collider. The acclaimed screenwriter, who most recently brought Star Trek: Picard to the small screen, said he is currently in the process of writing the pilot and that Taylor had signed on to direct it. However, he told Collider, "God knows" when cameras will turn on the production, referring to the fact that the project has been in development for three years already without any movement so far.

Taylor is best known for directing the second solo Thor outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, namely 2013's Thor: The Dark World, as well as seven episodes of HBO's fantasy epic Game of Thrones. Once the current film and TV shutdown (due to the coronavirus pandemic) is over, Taylor will resume post-production on The Many Saints of Newark, Warner Bros.' Sopranos prequel film that was recently delayed to March 2021.

The news of Taylor's involvement is the first major announcement regarding the Ringworld adaptation in some time. As yet, there have been no cast announcements and the series does not have a release date.
