Rings Of Power Season 2's "Edgier" Tone Teased By Director

With The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 on the horizon, a massive two-episode battle sequence is already planned. Season 1 of Amazon's Lord of the Rings (LOTR) series is nearly complete, laying the groundwork for four additional seasons, allegedly leading to the destruction of Sauron's physical form. In its debut season, Galadriel's search for the Dark Lord connects her to Halbrand and Númenor. Meanwhile, Elrond enlists the help of the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm, the elf Arondir assists the Southlands against a mysterious foe, and the Harfoots meet the magical Stranger.

Every Rings of Power season 1 thread will eventually lead to the arrival of Sauron and the forging of the eponymous Rings of Power. But among the political intrigue, personal relationships, and stunning landscapes of Middle-Earth lies another iconic LOTR element: the immense battle sequences. The first of many such scenes arose in The Rings of Power, episode 6, "Udûn," when the Southlanders defend their land against Adar and his Orc army, leading to an action-packed fight that ends with a volcanic eruption engulfing Galadriel and the townspeople.

In the upcoming Rings of Power season 2, an enormous two-episode battle sequence is reportedly set to occur. THR took an exclusive tour of series showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne's "War Room," detailing the concept art and planned sequences plastered on the walls. Besides introducing iconic locations and other well-known LOTR characters to season 2, the plans tease an episode-spanning conflict, but the specific battle is as yet unknown.

What Could Rings Of Power Season 2's Massive Battle Be?

Rings Of Power Episode 6

Although THR does not elaborate on the intended battle, some existing and teased Rings of Power story elements could provide some clues, even though the condensed series timeline makes it difficult to speculate about the conflict accurately. In the compiled Second Age histories, the first major war was the War of the Elves and Sauron, which occurred over a century after the forging of the Rings of Power. Sauron attacks the Elvish realm of Eregion, laying it to waste and stealing most of the titular Rings. So, the planned two-episode battle could be the siege of Eregion.

Thanks to Gil-Galad and Celebrimbor's mithril plan, the Elven smiths are close to being able to craft the powerful Rings, thus setting up the eventual destruction of Eregion. Elrond's relationship with Durin and the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm is also vital in this battle as they support Celebrimbor during the siege. While this is the most likely big battle to occur in The Rings of Power season 2 based on Tolkien's legendarium, an entirely new conflict is also possible to advance the plot. After all, McKay and Payne manufactured the Southlands battle in episode 6. With the Númenorians already in Middle-Earth, it is feasible that another significant skirmish with the Orcs could ensue, but LOTR fans will not know until The Rings of Power season 2 premieres.
