Warning: This article contains spoilers for the season finale of The Rings of Power. With the airing of its season finale, The Rings of Power has brought the first epic chapter of its story to a close. It has certainly been an action-packed season, with many important events taking place, many of which will echo right into the Third Age.

Obviously, given its narrative focus, there is quite a lot of foreshadowing in this first season, both toward the events of The Lord of the Rings and for the show’s future seasons from the creation of Mordor, to the creation of the rings themselves. But there are quite a few other hints at what will happen later on in Middle-earth.

Galadriel’s Ongoing Temptation

Even during the Second Age, it’s clear Galadriel is one of the most powerful beings in Middle-earth. However, there are already signs that she is going to have to endure quite a lot of temptation as the series unfolds.

Like so many others of her kind, she wants to preserve the essential life of the Elves, as well as the beauty of Middle-earth. While she rejects Sauron’s efforts to suborn her, it seems fairly certain that she will have to continue to fight back against her own impulses, particularly when it comes to seeking revenge.

Celebrimbor’s Fall From Grace

From the very beginning of the series, Celebrimbor has yearned to create something new and beautiful. With the crafting of the Three Elven Rings, he has clearly cemented his reputation as one of the great craftsmen of the Elves.

At the same time, there are hints that he wants to accomplish even more. This is precisely what makes him such an easy target for Sauron (in his guise as Halbrand), because he rightly sees this is the Elf’s fundamental weakness. The series suggests that this will be an ongoing issue for the Elvish smith in the days ahead.

A Confrontation Between Adar And Sauron

Adar is a fearsome and powerful fantasy villain in his own right, and there is a noble tragedy about him that is unique to the series. However, it’s very clear that he bears Sauron a fearsome grudge, and that the feelings are returned.

When the season ends, Sauron has arrived on the threshold of Mordor, where he no doubt hopes to claim a throne and a domain for his own. Whatever lies in store for these two, it seems more likely than not that they will engage in some sort of battle to see who will emerge as the true leader of the Orcs.

The Decline Of The Dwarves

During the Second Age, the Dwarves were one of the most powerful races in Middle-earth. In their great kingdom of Khazad-dum they were able to achieve heights of grandeur undreamed-of by others. Even here, however, there is a hint of things to come in the seasons ahead, particularly once it is revealed that there is a Balrog buried deep beneath the earth.

Though King Durin has forbidden the mining of mithril, this is an injunction his son and his wife Disa are almost certain to disregard once they are the ones sitting on the throne, with devastating consequences for all involved.

The Creation Of More Rings

The season finale of the first season sees the long-awaited creation of the Three Elven Rings. It is a triumphant moment, and their genesis will clearly have tremendous consequences for the Elves in the future.

As viewers know that nine and seven rings will also be made for Dwarves and Men, it suggests there is a lot more ring forging to come in later seasons. It remains to be seen just how much involvement Sauron will have in their creation. However, given how powerful he is, it seems likely that he will play a major part.

Pharazon Taking Over Numenor

Pharazon is one of thoseThe Rings of Power characters that viewers love to hate. He is the consummate oily politician, willing to say whatever he has to gain power and influence. There have been numerous moments that have foreshadowed the role he will play in the future history of the island of Numenor, particularly since he knows how to get the masses on his side.

It is clear that, in the future seasons, he will be one of those who tries to seize power for himself, even if that means forcing Miriel to marry him to solidify his claim on the throne.

The Return Of Celeborn

Celeborn and Galadriel in The Fellowship of the Ring

During The Lord of the Rings, Celeborn is one of the most powerful Elves in Middle-earth. At the time of The Rings of Power, however, he has, as far as Galadriel knows, fallen in battle, yet another casualty in the never-ending conflict with evil.

However, since he certainly is alive at the time of The Lord of the Rings, there is more than a suggestion that, at some point, he will return to Middle-earth and that he and Galadriel will engage in a long-awaited reunion.

The Colonization Of Middle-earth

As book readers know, Numenor gradually goes from being a kingdom of enlightened men to a colonizing power. With their powerful navy, they undertake to establish colonies on the coasts of Middle-earth. There are numerous moments of foreshadowing that show that this is going to take place during the time of The Rings of Power.

Among other things, Pharazon tells his son that this is one of his intentions. With their powerful navy, there is nothing stopping Numenor from sweeping everyone before them and bringing much of the human realms of Middle-earth under their dominion.

Eärien And The Numenorean Fear Of Mortality

Eärien is one of those characters who was created specifically for the show. Even though she has largely been a secondary character so far, there are still indications that she is going to play a greater role.

Most importantly, there are some foreshadowings that she will be one of those who leads the charge when the Numenoreans grow weary of the fact that they have to die and pass out of the world. As an architect, she might even be one of those who takes the lead in building Sauron’s temple to Morgoth.

Sauron Has Designs On Numenor

During one of his final conversations with Galadriel, Sauron reveals that, had she not taken him away from Numenor, he would have been happy to stay there. While it isn’t clear just yet what his designs are for the island kingdom, his words here suggest that he has something in mind.

As book readers know, he was one of those who was the architect of its final downfall. Given what he is already doing in The Rings of Power, it is very likely that this will be one of his major plans once he seizes control of Mordor.
