Rimac, the best-guarded EV secret once tied to Bugatti, is showing off its high-performance car, which can race to 60 miles per hour in just 1.85 seconds. To stand out from the competition EVs compete in many areas. How far they can go when fully charged, innovative features, and self-driving are some of the ways they set themselves apart. But none of these is more symbolic for electric vehicles than the quarter-mile run.

EVs are still trying to shake off the stigma that electric engines are not as powerful nor as fast as combustion engines. Despite the fact that EVs today can take on the fastest muscle cars, car makers still have to show off their 0 to 60 and quarter-mile run times. A quarter-mile time shows how a car handles acceleration in longer distances while 0 to 60 shows how fast it can accelerate.

Rimac announced it is going independent, setting itself free from Bugatti. To prove the force they have, they are highlighting their Nevera model. Completing the run in just 8.5 seconds, the Nevera tops the average quarter-mile times of just about every other EV, with the exception of exotic concepts. Nevera also slashes Tesla’s 0 to 60 with an incredible 1.85 seconds. The fastest available Tesla, the Model S Plaid, hits 60mph in 1.99 seconds.

Rimac says the company is now fully operational and focused on its new ambitions. The company is not only selling its Nevera model but selling components to brands all over Europe. It is engaged with Porsche, Hyundai, Kia, Aston Martin, and many others. The company says it will be creating and testing these high-performance components on its own vehicles first. By 2024 Rimac expects to flood the market with tends of thousands of high-performance systems and hundreds of thousands of special components.

The dream for me was to build my own electric hypercar. With Nevera we believe we’ve achieved that dream,” Mate Rimac, CEO of Rimac says. But the CEO of Rimac also makes it clear that Nevera is just a showcase of the technology they are selling to other carmakers. Only 150 Nevera are currently rolling on the streets today.

They achieve top speeds of 412 km/h. The car is verified as the fastest accelerating production car in the world. Nevera gets its name from the sudden, unexpected, and intimidating lightning storms that form in the Mediterranean. Rimac says the speed and severity of this new generation EV hypercar speak of its true inspiration, the powerful forces of nature.
