The next entry is set to take place there, so here's Riddick's homeworld of Furya explained. Pitch Black was a modestly budgeted creature feature with a great hook that also featured a breakout performance from Vin Diesel. He played a convict named Riddick, who is one of the few survivors of a spaceship crash landing on a planet overrun with light-sensitive monsters. Riddick's "eye shine" ability - which let him see in the dark - and superhuman endurance made him the only hope of the others.

Pitch Black's near-instant cult status, combined with the surprise success of The Fast And The Furious, gave Diesel and director David Twohy the clout to make a much more ambitious follow-up with The Chronicles Of Riddick, which even had an anime spinoff. This saw the title character help taking down the Necromonger Empire, who intend to kill or convert all life in the known universe to their cause. The sequel also dived deeper into Riddick's backstory and the source of his abilities. The sequel was a box-office disappointment, and it took nearly ten years for a lower-budget follow-up to arrive in the form of 2013's Riddick.

Riddick is a character very close to Diesel's heart, so while he's been busy in recent years with the Fast & Furious movie series, he's always intended to return to the part. He gave an update in September 2021 stating Riddick 4: Furya was "closer than you think." While the 2013 sequel was largely standalone, Fuyra will likely dive deeper into Riddick's origin and may even visit his homeworld, which he was seeking out. The Chronicles Of Riddick revealed the Furyans were a race of fierce warriors famed for their strength and endurance and that Riddick's "eye shine" was a natural ability and not the result of surgery as he stated in Pitch Black.

Furya was described as a harsh world where only the strongest could survive, which explains their almost superhuman abilities. Their animalistic nature makes them able to befriend various alien predators too, as seen with his dog-like companion in Riddick. The Chronicles Of Riddick movie also revealed that the Necromonger's launched a genocidal assault on Furya, as the Lord Marshal heard a prophecy he would one day be killed by a Furyan male. Few survived, including Riddick, who later fulfilled the prophecy by killing the Lord Marshal.

He was also helped in this task by the "Wrath of the Furyans," which gave him the power of the countless Furyans who were slaughtered. The acclaimed video game spinoff Escape from Butcher Bay even touched on this ability, though, again, 2013's Riddick largely moved away from this lore. Riddick 4: Furya - assume that's the final title - seems like it will really flesh out the title antiheroes past, and it sounds like Furya itself might be the harshest environment seen in the franchise to date.
