NBC Reenlists Ricky Gervais to Host Next Golden Globes

Ricky Gervais will be back in 2011 to host the 68th Annual Golden Globes. Award show fans, you may rejoice.

NBC has announced that Ricky Gervais will host the Golden Globe Awards for the second straight year in early 2011.

For those keeping track at home, this will be the 68th Annual Golden Globes. It's generally the third most-watched awards show of the year, behind the Oscars and Grammys. No doubt NBC is trying to claw its way closer to the top by once again employing the services of internationally-known jokester, Gervais.

Here's what Paul Telegdy, Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming, NBC and Universal Media Studios (how 'bout that for a job title?) had to say about Gervais returning to host the next Golden Globes:

“As viewers discovered with our last awards telecast, Ricky’s surprising and unpredictable humor is a great fit for the Globes which will continue as a live event across the nation… He’s a true force of nature with a wicked sense of humor who always keeps everyone on their toes waiting for the unexpected.”

Gervais may be best known for creating the original The Office, which aired on the BBC in the UK before it got Americanized on NBC.  He also did great work writing and starring in Extras (which also features some of the best work by guest star spots by celebrities since The Muppet Show).

More Ricky

Gervais really seems to have nailed the subtle, intelligent brand of humor that's very much in vogue these days. The preening, self-congratulatory tone of award shows has never appealed to me, but Gervais did well last year and is just the guy to lampoon the idea while still making everyone laugh.

The Golden Globe Awards will air on NBC on Sunday, January 16, 2011.
