Rick & Morty isn’t exactly a sentimental family series, but the show did pull off a cute secret Thanksgiving special a few years back - even if it was so short that a lot of fans didn’t even see it. If there’s one thing that Adult Swim’s flagship series Rick & Morty is known for, it’s not sentimentality. Ribald, raucous, and above all irreverent, Rick & Morty may have come a long way since it began life as an outrageous spoof of Back to the Future, but the anarchic animated sci-fi sitcom remains a silly self-aware satire with little time for hugging and learning.

Although at times the sad reality of Rick’s character is taken seriously by Rick & Morty, there are precious few moments of genuine sweetness on the show. That said, like a lot of Community creator Dan Harmon’s work, Rick & Morty has been known to sneak in occasional moments of pathos amongst its gory slapstick and silly humor. This balance is epitomized in the 2017 short “The Poop in My Pants,” a cute Thanksgiving special that some Rick & Morty fans never even saw, as it was posted to Youtube by the series' creators.

While Rick & Morty has never done a Thanksgiving special (despite 'Anatomy Park's Jurassic Park parody being a solid Christmas episode), they did release this moving short starring Mr. Poopybutthole in honor of the holiday back in 2017. Despite clocking in at a mere 2 minutes, “The Poop in My Pants” offers a poignant peek into the character’s previously unseen life story. The surprisingly sweet vignette manages to condense all the hallmarks of a classic Thanksgiving sitcom special into under 3 minutes while holding onto Rick & Morty’s quirky humor, and seeing Mr. Poopybutthole look back on his life lets Rick & Morty un-ironically celebrate family, love, and everything viewers have to be thankful for without losing the show’s trademark goofy style.

Mr Poopybutthole

Entirely without dialogue and scored beautifully, the short follows Mr. Poopybutthole as he looks through a photo album and reminisces on his meeting, falling for, dating, marrying, and eventually beginning a family with Ms. Poopybutthole. There are high points and tragedy alike as the pair welcome their first pets into their married life, only for their beloved cat to pass away. Luckily, the next entry in Mr. Poopybutthole’s family album shows that this loss wasn’t the end of his new family, as he and Ms. Poopybutthole welcome their first child into the world. The surprisingly tender short ends with a wistful Mr. Poopybuthhole looking into his kitchen at his wife and child, thankful for everything that led him here.

It’s a short so far from Rick & Morty’s typically cynical, silly tone that viewers are almost expecting a pitch-black punchline to appear by the end, but adorably this Thanksgiving treat proves to be a sincere and sweet tribute to the holiday. Where a lot of competing sitcoms such as Brooklyn 99 go all out for the holiday and center entire specials around Thanksgiving, Rick & Morty’s sweet, sparse short proves that sometimes less is more in its effective mission to remind viewers of everything they have to be thankful for.
