According to the latest trailer for Rick and Morty season 6, part 2, Dr. Wong will return to the show, but this time, Rick is seeking her out. The trailer for Rick and Morty season 6, part 2 promises a lot of anarchic fun, but it is one of the promotional teaser’s quieter moments that might be its most exciting, surprising revelation. Despite the first half of the season seemingly setting Rick and Morty season 6, part 2’s formula in stone, the appearance of Susan Sarandon’s Dr. Wong proves that the culminating chapter might include some substantial character growth.

Dr. Wong was first seen in Rick and Morty’s season 3, episode 3 “Pickle Rick.” This outing saw Rick go to absurd extremes to avoid attending therapy but also left him stumped when Dr. Wong expected a modicum of introspection from him. However, in the trailer for Rick and Morty season 6 part 2, it is Rick who seeks her out. If Rick sought out Dr. Wong, that’s a massive improvement but, even if he’s there because one of his family members made him go, that’s a sign the Smiths are becoming a vaguely healthy support system. Either way, this suggests some surprisingly promising stuff.

Why Rick Needs A Therapy Arc

Susan Sarandon as Dr. Wong in Rick and Morty Season 6

While Rick and Morty season 6 undid Morty’s season 5 arc by making him the passive, co-dependent figure he was before his character growth, Rick and Morty season 6, part 2’s trailer promises Rick might be the one to improve in the upcoming episodes. In her first appearance, Dr. Wong forced Rick to reflect when she argued that therapy, like brushing your teeth, was part of the unglamorous work of maintaining a healthy, happy life and relationships. For once, Rick was left with no clever comeback. Since he seeks her out in Rick and Morty season 6, part 2, Rick might finally have internalized this idea.

Rick and Morty season 6, part 1 dropped Rick’s redemption. He removed Marta from Morty’s brain, he refused any concessions to the Night Family, and Rick manipulated everyone around him from Morty to the dinosaurs to the President. In all of season 6 part 1’s episodes so far, Rick proved he is still the same Rick (even if he isn’t as evil as Rick Prime). However, since he seems to be the one who seeks out Dr. Wong, the trailer implies that Rick may finally be ready to do the boring everyday work of being a decent person. This, however, could be a trick.

Why Rick & Morty's Season 6 Part 2 Trailer Might Be A Fakeout

Rick and Morty season 6 changes season 5

The trailer for Rick and Morty season 6 part 2 does show Rick attending therapy with Dr. Wong, however, this might be a one-off. While Rick and Morty’s canon shows that Rick seemingly wants to change when given the chance, the character has squandered opportunities for self-improvement before. In Rick and Morty season 5, episode 9, "Forgetting Sarick Mortshall," Rick conceded that his relationship with Morty was abusive, one-sided, and unfair, but he has since done little to address this. As such, the trailer’s promise might be a false one, and Rick and Morty season 6 part 2 could be business as usual for the show’s antihero.

New episodes of Rick and Morty will return on Sunday, November 20 on Adult Swim.
