Rick and Morty shares a very rough animatic of an exciting scene from season 5. With the show having recently wrapped up its long-awaited fourth season, Rick and Morty fans now begin the potentially long and arduous wait for season 5 of the wildly popular and widely acclaimed Adult Swim animated series.

Of course, before season 4 arrived, show creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon promised the wait between seasons would not be as long as in prior years (the fact that they signed a deal to produce 70 episodes basically guaranteed they would have to get them out faster than in the past). However, since that time, both Roiland and Harmon have added to their own work loads by taking on other projects. Roiland of course teamed with Mike McMahan to create the Hulu animated series Solar Opposites, while Harmon recently took on the task of creating a new animated series for Fox.

As if to assure fans that Roiland and Harmon’s new duties won’t lead to another protracted wait for more Rick and Morty, Adult Swim just released a sneak preview of season 5 in the form of a very rough animatic. Obviously there’s still a lot of work to be done on the scene, but at least it proves work is being done at all. See the clip in the space below:

In the scene, which obviously is somewhat hard to make out due to the crude animation, something terrible appears to have happened to Rick at some kind of sci-fi nightclub. While Rick suffers a near-death crisis in which he bemoans how he’s wasted his life, Morty takes matters into his own hands and rescues them from an on-coming Lovecraftian monster. Unfortunately, as Morty is trying to fly Rick’s ship through a shrinking portal back to Earth, the ship is damaged and sent on an apparent death-dive toward the planet. Believing he is himself doomed, Morty puts in a call to his life-long love Jessica to tell her he’s sorry he didn’t get to know her better, and is surprised when Jessica asks him out on a date. Inspired to live so he can finally go out with his dream girl, Morty manages to pull the ship out of its dive, but the danger isn’t over as it ends up landing on the ocean, which only summons yet another threat in the form of Rick’s eternal nemesis Mr. Nimbus.

In just a few minutes of very rough animation, the clip manages to capture a lot of what makes Rick and Morty great: twisty sci-fi action, humorous existential crisis, plucky spirit and overall insanity. It will be fun to see what the sequence finally looks like when it’s finished, but obviously fans will have to wait for Rick and Morty season 5 to arrive before they get a chance to do that. Hopefully, promises of faster turnaround on the show won’t turn out to be mere wishful thinking.
