A new claymation ad for Rick and Morty season 5 sees the hit Adult Swim series crossing over with the Quentin Tarantino classic Pulp Fiction. The 1994 crime comedy weaves an interconnected tale of several criminals across Los Angeles, including John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson's hitmen Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield, Ving Rhames' mob boss Marsellus Wallace, Uma Thurman's mob boss wife Mia Wallace and Bruce Willis' aging boxer who double crosses Wallace, Butch Coolidge. The film is generally considered Tarantino's most-celebrated film, having earned seven Oscar nominations and winning for Best Original Screenplay and grossing nearly $214 million against its $8.5 million budget.

Rick and Morty hails from co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon and stars the latter as the titular mad scientist and his teenage grandson as they journey through the multiverse on dangerous adventures. Alongside Roiland, the cast for the series includes Sarah Chalke as Rick's previously estranged daughter Beth, Spencer Grammer as his granddaughter Summer and Chris Parnell as Rick's timid son-in-law Jerry. The animated sci-fi comedy began as Back to the Future parody short created by Roiland before Adult Swim partnered he and Harmon together to develop a series, with the duo electing to expand the short.

Season 5 for Rick and Morty has seen Adult Swim take to a unique marketing campaign with the claymation crossover ads. Beginning with mainstream fare such as Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro and Godzilla vs. Kong, subsequent videos have explored everything from indie favorites Hobo with a Shotgun and Ari Aster's Hereditary to the classic Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Though some of these crossovers could have been fun to see come to life in the season itself, the creators behind the ads infuse just as much surreal joy as the series' writers room.

The latest season of Rick and Morty may not see a Pulp Fiction-based reality for the adult animated series, but there has been no shortage of high-stakes multiverse shenanigans and thoughtful parodies. With spoofs of Tremors and Voltron to the Hellraiser and mafia movie parodies, every episode has worked well to further evolve its characters while still attempting to break the minds of its viewers. Only time will tell what the rest of season 5 has in store when it returns in September.
