Adult Swim releases the Rick and Morty season 5 finale extended trailer ahead of the hour-long episode airing in early September. Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, the delightfully twisted adult cartoon follows the inter-dimensional travels of the nihilistic and self-destructive genius scientist, Rick Sanchez, and his eager-to-please teenage grandson, Morty. First airing in 2013, the show has quickly become a fan favorite and pop culture mainstay, collecting a swathe of awards and accolades.
Following the enormous success of its first three seasons, Adult Swim signed a massive deal with Roiland and Harmon in 2018, ordering another 70 episodes to be released over several seasons. The long-anticipated season 5 premiered in June, though Rick and Morty’s latest season has drawn some criticism from fans for its over-reliance on genre parodies and a seeming departure from the more thoughtful humor that characterized its earlier episodes. Fans were also disappointed to learn that the show was taking a month-long hiatus before airing its two-part finale.
Now, Adult Swim has released an extended promo for the hour-long Rick and Morty season 5 finale on their YouTube channel. While it features much of the same footage seen in the previous finale trailer, the clip strongly hints that Rick and Morty are potentially looking to part ways at the end of this season. The trailer shows Rick picking Morty's replacement using a spinning prize wheel. Check out the new extended trailer below.
Earlier this season, Morty found himself in a similar position when his status as Rick’s constant companion was challenged by his own sister, Summer. Poking fun at anime classic Voltron, the season’s seventh episode, “Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion," saw Morty being increasingly edged out of his position as Rick’s sidekick in favor of Summer. In this latest trailer, Morty's unsuccessful attempt to cover up his mistakes and top up Rick’s portal gun fuel with lime soda seems to place him even more firmly in Rick's bad books. At this point in the series, it seems Rick is willing to accept almost anything as Morty's replacement.
Of course, since Morty’s name makes up half of the show's title, it seems inevitable that, despite the current issues between grandfather and grandson, fences will eventually be mended one way or another. Whatever tricks Morty manages to pull to find himself back in Rick’s good graces, however, are all but guaranteed to be bizarre (and quite possibly depraved). Fans of Rick and Morty will find out how the duo’s tumultuous relationship fares for themselves when the season 5 finale airs on September 5.
