Summer Smith takes the mic for the Rick and Morty holiday rap “It’s Rickmas Time.” 2021 saw the arrival of Rick and Morty season 5 and indeed the season’s final episode turned out to be a game-changer for the wildly successful Adult Swim animated series.

After the events of the season 5 finale, which in essence rebooted the whole relationship between Rick and Morty while seemingly wrapping up the show’s long-running multiverse storyline, fans are very curious to know how things will be different when season 6 arrives. Among the many things set up for the future by season 5, one big development is the evolution of Morty’s sister Summer, who is becoming a more central character and may be even more important in future seasons. This is obviously good news for Summer fans after years of the character being relegated to the sidelines while Rick and Morty went off on their wild universe-hopping adventures.

In perhaps another sign that Summer is set to become a bigger character in Rick and Morty season 6, the Adult Swim show just dropped a holiday rap song that features not Rick or Morty on the mic but the Smith daughter instead. Entitled “It’s Rickmas Time,” the rap is naturally nothing like your standard holiday-time musical fare, but instead is incredibly dark and filled with curse words, not to mention all the show references. Rick and Morty of course has a long tradition of unleashing memorable musical numbers from “Get Schwifty” to “Terryfold” to “Goodnight Moonmen.” Obviously “It’s Rickmas Time” is different as it isn’t actually featured on the show, but the song still demonstrates the kind of lyrical cleverness fans have come to expect from the show’s original tunes. But even with that lyrical cleverness, the song truthfully is still basically just a bunch of shout-outs to characters from Rick and Morty, a fact rapping Summer herself admits.

“It’s Rickmas Time” may not indeed put the average person into much of a holiday mood but Rick and Morty fans might just find themselves feeling a little more festive as they listen to its litany of character references, well-delivered by Summer voice actor Spencer Grammer. If nothing else, the song represents a little Rick and Morty morsel to help tide fans over as they wait for the big feast that is season 6. Unfortunately, Rick and Morty season 6 does not yet have an official release date from Adult Swim, though it was recently promised that it will arrive some time in 2022.
