After months of waiting, the moment has finally arrived when the creators of Adult Swim's Rick and Morty can try a batch of McDonald's infamous Szechuan sauce.
Becoming an internet sensation, the Szechuan sauce rose to meme-able popularity thanks to the Rick and Morty Season 3 premiere "The Rickshank Redemption". The McDonald's Szechuan dipping sauce was a genuine product to promote Disney's Mulan back in 1997 that Rick and Morty mastermind Justin Roiland became obsessed with. And so he decided to try and get it back by making trying the sauce again Rick Sanchez's never-ending quest.
It didn't quite take the nine seasons that Rick had said it would in the Season 3 premiere, but as a kind gesture for name dropping the golden arches about 1,000 times, the McDonald's bigwigs gifted co-creator Justin Roiland with 640z of the discontinued sauce in a special presentation case. Roiland promised that he would film the tasting session alongside the show's co-creator Dan Harmon, and now you can see the results.
While Harmon was quickly bowled over by this nugget of nostalgia, the reviews weren't quite as unanimous among the rest of the crew. From "It's not bad" to "I don't like it", some even preferred the current run of Sweet 'n' Sour sauce - it seems that even the guys behind the Szechuan resurgence can't figure out what all the fuss is about. However, the final word has to go to Roiland, who seemed more than happy with the fruits of his labor:
“It’s really good, I swear. Bring it back please, so we can all die of diabetes!”
Since the Season 3 premiere, there has been Szechuan fever gripping the internet, with fans trying to recreate their own recipe for the stuff, insane internet bidding wars, and even celebrities like Deadmau5 wanting a dip of the action. McDonald's sure know a marketing opportunity when they see one, so giving Roiland his sweet dreams was a clever move on the food conglomerates side.
There are reports that McDonald's may continue to ship limited-edition batches out to the public, but there is no word yet on a Rick and Morty-inspired revival across the chain. Some of the sci-fi show's staff may not be convinced that the beautiful brown sauce was worth $250 per ounce, but if it is good enough for Rick Sanchez, it should surely be good enough for the rest of the galaxy?
Rick and Morty continues Sunday with ‘The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy’ @11:30pm on Adult Swim.
