The inspiration behind an all-new Rick and Morty comic series Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons: The Meeseeks Adventure came in the form of recently released sketches by the series’ writer. At an event that celebrates tabletop games and RPGs, Jim Zub, the writer behind the new Rick and Morty series, played with the idea of merging Rick and Morty characters with Dungeons & Dragons class systems. From Barbarians to Wizards, many of the D&D icons got the Rick and Morty treatment, which will be seen in action with the release of the Dungeons & Dragons tie-in series.

Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons: The Meeseeks Adventure is an all-new series from the comics publisher Oni Press that continues the adventures of Rick and Morty in a Dungeons & Dragons-inspired world. Rick and Morty and Dungeons & Dragons first came together in August of 2018 with the launch of the comic miniseries Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons. The crossover follows Rick and Morty as the multiverse-traveling duo explore the joys of roleplaying games, with Rick upping the ante and bringing Morty and the rest of the Smith family to a Dungeons & Dragons universe where their roleplaying characters come to life in brutal fashion. Now, fans are being thrown into an all-new adventure stemming from that initial partnership, and have the opportunity to learn of the inspiration behind this next chapter.

In a Twitter post writer Jim Zub outlines how he formed the storyline Rick and Morty will follow as they venture into this dangerous alternate dimension. “The concept for this issue came from PAX Unplugged 2018. Someone asked for a Meeseeks sketch and I started imagining what it would be like if Meeseeks ran amuck in D&D,” wrote Zub in the post revealing the inspirational artwork. “By the end of the con I’d sketched a bunch of Meeseeks adventurers and the story started to form…

The new comic, Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons: The Meeseeks Adventure written by Zub with art by Troy Little and Leonardo Ito, will seemingly return fans to the world of real life D&D with an apparent Mr. Meeseeks takeover. As shown in the cover of the series, which can be seen in the same Twitter thread as the inspirational sketches, there is an army of Mr. Meeseeks all having seemingly adapted to the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Not only will the series have a plethora of D&D Meeseeks causing chaos, but it will also follow a pair of “hapless rogues” who found a Meeseeks box and unleashed them. The two rogues will have full control of these brutal, fantasy-esque Meeseeks, which will assuredly create major challenges for Rick and Morty as the story progresses throughout the series.

Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons: The Meeseeks Adventure will assuredly have Rick and Morty fans on the edge of their seats as the creative minds behind the series explore the nearly endless possibilities offered them through the bold merging of sci-fi and fantasy. Some of those Rick and Morty possibilities have now been put on full display as they originated during that PAX Unplugged expo and have been shared with the world ahead of the new series launch. Rick and Morty become D&D icons in sketches that inspired the new series, giving fans a rare insight into the creative vision of the writer ahead of the all-new adventure.
