Developer Squanch Games and the creators of Rick And Morty are producing High On Life, a humorous FPS that is every bit as quirky and bizarre as the shows they are known for. The new title was one of the many games highlighted in today’s Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase 2022, which is part of the 2022 Summer Game Fest event that started on Thursday.

Rick and Morty is no stranger to gaming, as the hit Adult Swim animated series has had several tie-in games over the years. These include the Pokémon-style mobile game Pocket Mortys and the VR title Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality. Rick and Morty themselves have promoted games and systems like Death Stranding and the PS5, as well as making virtual appearances in Fortnite and the upcoming crossover mascot fighter MultiVersus. In 2016, Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roland joined forces with gaming veteran Tanya Watson to form Sqaunch Games, a studio devoted to producing quirky games in the same style as Roland’s animated work. So far, Sqaunch Games has produced three titles: a VR office simulator titled Accounting +, the mobile VR space adventure Dr. Splorchy Presents: Space Heroes, and 2019’s comedy puzzle game Trover Saves The Universe.

During today’s Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase livestream, Sqaunch Games unveiled a trailer for its newest project, a colorful FPS titled High On Life. This bizarre shooter puts players in the role of a bounty hunter tasked with taking down an alien drug cartel that harvests humans. Players are armed with a variety of living weapons, including a standard gun voiced by Justin Roland in an identical voice to his portrayal of Morty Smith, a bomb launcher that fires its exploding children at enemies, and a talking knife that seems eager to be plunged into hostile aliens. Together with these strange weapons, the player will ascend the ranks to become a feared mercenary in a quirky adventure on par with a typical episode of Rick and Morty.

Today’s Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase has featured a few exciting surprises and future Xbox Game Pass titles, including the upcoming vampire survival shooter Redfall and the stylish monochrome side-scroller Hollow Knight: Silksong. Other big Xbox Games Showcase highlights include a new Minecraft strategy spin-off titled Minecraft Legends, a new Halo-themed DLC for Microsoft Flight Simulator, and a new gameplay trailer for the rodent-filled action-adventure title A Plague Tale: Requiem.

High On Life shows its Rick and Morty influences heavily throughout its recent Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase trailer, which included plenty of wacky characters and dark, surreal humor with its murder-happy living weapons and the morbid tale of humans being harvested to make alien drugs. Players will be able to thwart this twisted plot and step into the role of an infamous bounty hunter when High On Life launches later this year.
