Rick and Morty is a comedy series created by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland for Adult Swim which follows the sci-fi adventures of the grandfather and grandson duo. The unique mix of highbrow and lowbrow comedy has led to the show's rapid rise in popularity which resulted in Adult Swim ordering 70 additional episodes to be created after only 3 successful seasons.
Since the show is animated, it relies on a talented group of actors to bring the characters to life, many of whom can be recognized from other projects.
Justin Roiland As Rick and Morty
Rick Sanchez is a genius alcoholic scientist whose antics often put himself and his family in danger. Morty Smith, the second half of the pair, is a 14-year-old kid who frequently finds himself in over his head while dealing with his grandfather,
Both Rick and Morty are voiced by one of the show's creators, Justin Roiland. Roiland also plays Korvo on Solar Opposites, another series he created, and has had voice roles on shows like Gravity Falls and Adventure Time as Blendin Blandin and Earl of Lemongrab, respectively. In addition to the two leads, Roiland voices several other characters including Mr. Seseeks, Mr. Poopybutthole, and many more.
Chris Parnell As Jerry
Jerry Smith is Beth's currently unemployed husband and Morty and Summer's dad. Rick does not approve of him and the two butt heads in almost every scene they share. Jerry is often the butt of the majority of the show's jokes and is constantly poorly treated by the other characters, his wife and children included.
Jerry is voiced by Chris Parnell who was a cast member on Saturday Night Live for eight seasons. Parnell also played Dr. Leo Spaceman on 30 Rock, Wayne on Happy Together, and both Cyril Figgis and Buck Henry on Archer. Parnell has also appeared in several films including 21 Jump Street and Sisters.
Spencer Grammer As Summer
Summer Smith is the sister of Morty and the granddaughter of Rick who will sometimes join them on their escapades. While she is portrayed as a stereotypical teenager who is obsessed with social media and is overly concerned with how she's viewed by those around her, she can often prove to be smarter than she lets on.
Summer is voiced by Spencer Grammer who has made several guest appearances on shows like Scorpion and Grey's Anatomy but is best known for portraying Casey Cartwright on the show Greek. While she doesn't have many film credits, she has been a regular on series such as Ironside and Mr. Robinson.
Sarah Chalke As Beth
Beth Smith is Rick's daughter who is a lot like her father despite her feeling some animosity towards him due to him leaving her and her mother when she was young. The most recent season introduced a clone version of the character who has abandoned her family to travel in space.
Beth (and the clone version of Beth) are played by Sarah Chalke who is known for playing Elliot Reid on Scrubs, Becky Conner on Roseanne, and Stella Zinman on How I Met Your Mother. She also had a recurring role in the third season of the sitcom Cougar Town and has been in dozens of made-for-TV movies including Woman on the Ledge, City Boy, and A Child's Wish.
Kari Wahlgren As Jessica
Jessica is a girl that Morty goes to school with that he has a crush on. Lots of Morty's motivation comes from a desire for them to be together and he will often go out of his way to be alone with her, even accidentally destroying the world in "Rick Potion #9" in an effort to get her to like him.
Jessica is voiced by Kari Wahlgren whos filmography mostly consists of animated projects such as television shows like The Fairly OddParents, Phineas and Ferb, and Ben 10. She has also been involved with animated films like Bolt, Shrek the Third, and The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature.
Cassie Steele As Tammy
Tammy Guterman was an undercover as a member of the Galactic Federation posing as one of Summer Smith's friends. She revealed her identity at the wedding between her and Birdperson, a criminal she was after, and was using to get to Rick and other members of his old crew.
Tammy is voiced by Cassie Steele, who is best known for playing Abby Vargas on The L.A. Complex and Manny Santos on Degrassi: The Next Generation and spinoffs like Degrassi Spring Break Movie, Degrassi Goes Hollywood and Degrassi Takes Manhattan. She had recurring roles on shows like The Best Years and Instant Star and has appeared in several TV films like The Dorm, Sorority Surrogate, and Zombie Shark.
Dan Harmon As Birdperson
Birdperson is Rick's best friend and one of the only characters that understand him as a person. He was killed during his wedding to Tammy which turned out to be a trap. He was later revived and transformed into Pheonixperson when he started working for the Galactic Federation and is currently in Rick's care.
Birdperson is voiced by the show's other creator, Dan Harmon. In addition to Rick and Morty, Harmon created and produced the comedy series Community. He has also had cameos and made appearances in shows like Arrested Development, Animals, and Dr. Ken.
Brandon Johnson As Mr. Goldenfold
Although he is usually absent due to Rick seeing it as a waste of time, Morty is still a student at Harry Herpson High School. One of the characters that he usually interacts with when he is at school is his extremely unqualified math teacher, Mr. Goldenfold.
Mr. Goldenfold is voiced by Brandon Johnson. Johnson has appeared on dozens of different television shows but his two main roles have been as Alphonse Inuit on NTSF:SD:SUV and Danny Beaker on RVC: The Lone Shopping Network. Johnson has also made guest appearances on The Mindy Project, Frasier, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Keith David As The President
On a couple of occasions, Rick and Morty have had to work alongside the White House. This meant they needed to team-up with the President of the United States, with the on-again and off-again relationship between the three of them being one of the best sources of comedy in the series.
The Commander In Chief is portrayed by actor Keith David. David is best known for his work as King in Platoon and Childs in The Thing. He has also acted in films like Crash, Barbershop, and The Chronicles of Riddick franchise as well as starred in tv series' as Elroy Patashnik in Community and Bishop James Greenleaf in Greenleaf.
