Rick and Morty Fans Are Going Nuts Over Rare Szechuan Sauce

Rick and Morty fans are going nuts over rare Szechuan Sauce. The limited edition McDonalds dip – which was originally a tie-in to the 1998 animated Mulan movie - was given manifold name-drops in the season 3 premiere episode, “The Rickshank Redemption.” Rick, trapped inside his own memories, opted to relive the now-decommissioned sauce in all its glory. And after returning to reality, he declared the search for Szechuan Sauce to be his series arc.

Never shy about garnering some publicity, McDonald's sprung into action. The fast food giant tweeted some humorous reactions as the social media hype intensified on the night, before pulling out the big guns and actually sending a bottle of sauce to the show’s co-creator and star, and real life Szechuan Sauce enthusiast, Justin Roiland.

McDonald's also pledged to send some sauce to select Rick and Morty fans who retweeted their post, which is where things get really interesting – and a bit shocking. One lucky fan was sent 64 ounces of the sauce, and, after receiving the delicious package, decided to sell it on eBay. “I’m auctioning it off here to help out others and pay a few bills”, the product page reads, and the current highest bid at the time of writing stands at a staggering $6,100 USD.

Ebay Rick and Morty Szechuan Sauce

In a TwitLonger post, Robert Workman, the winner of the sauce, explained his decision to sell it on, shortly before the auction began: “I know some folks are going to be mad that I’m selling it. “Open it! Enjoy it!” Well, I would, but most of my friends are out of town and trying to fly in and set something up would put me more in debt. This way, someone who wants the sauce can really have it, and I can still enjoy time with my friends.”

“I found a buddy willing to list it on his page and we’re a go to list both the special case and the 64 oz. of Szechuan sauce together”, Workman also said, before explaining things a little bit more. “I’ve had suggestions from people that I should open it and sell little tastes to everyone, but a. that would make me like a Scarface for dipping sauce, which I’m not, and b. it’d be nuts trying to measure it all, send it all and make sure everything’s insured. So this will be so much simpler.”

“I hold McDonald’s and Chef Mike in the highest respect. I really do”, Workman added, making sure not to offend the golden arches with his Szechuan Sauce sale. “Mike has done an amazing job bringing this back for some lucky people to enjoy and I will do everything in my power to assure that it’s in the hands of someone that will truly enjoy it with a party of people, instead of just letting it rot away on a shelf for all to see.”

Also, 10% of the proceeds will go to Extra Life, a Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraising program “that empowers the gaming community to make a difference in the lives of local sick and injured kids.” At the time of writing, there are two days left on the auction, so there’s still time to get your bid in. And that’s the waaaaaaaay the news goes.
