Here's why a planned remake of Revenge Of The Nerds was cancelled after it had already started filming. Revenge Of The Nerds is a 1984 comedy that stars Robert Carradine and Anthony Edwards (Top Gun) as Lewis and Gilbert, two nerdy friends who unite a group of fellow outcasts to take on the Alpha Betas, a jock fraternity that bullies them relentlessly. The movie was a hit upon release and became a cult comedy, though its legacy has been somewhat marred by several problematic scenes, such as Lewis disguising himself as Stan - the leader of the Alpha Betas - to have sex with his girlfriend.
The first sequel arrived in 1987 with Revenge Of The Nerds II: Nerds In Paradise. This follow-up takes the title characters to Florida, where they run into trouble with a new chapter of the Alpha Betas, led by new bully Roger (Bradley Whitford, Get Out). Anthony Edwards didn't want to appear because he disliked the script, but due to a contractual obligation he made a cameo. The sequel was a hit but grossed about half of the original. The franchise then went to TV, with Revenge Of The Nerds III: The Next Generation and Revenge Of The Nerds IV: Nerds In Love arriving in 1992 and 1994 respectively.
There was also an attempt to turn Revenge Of The Nerds into a TV series with a 1991 pilot that wasn't picked up. R-rated teen comedies were still in vogue during the mid-2000s thanks to the success of the American Pie franchise, so a remake of Revenge Of The Nerds was put together in 2006. Kyle Newman was hired to direct, while Adam Brody (Shazam!), Katie Cassidy, Jenna Dewan, and Chris Marquette were hired to star.
The Revenge Of The Nerds remake started shooting in October 2006 but quickly ran into problems when the production was set to film at Georgia's Emory University. Officials declined to become involved after reading the script, which forced the production to move to a smaller campus instead. Fox Atomic ultimately decided to scrap the project due to the production issues and the fact it wasn't shaping up well after the first two weeks of dailies were reviewed.
While it's unusual for a movie to be cancelled after it had already started filming, it's happened before, such as the original version of Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. It sounds like it might have been for the best the Revenge Of The Nerds remake was scrapped since production issues had already impacted the movie. In October 2019, reports suggested a new Revenge Of The Nerds movie was in development featuring some of the original cast, which has yet to be confirmed.
