Animal Crossing: New Horizons has allowed players a substantial amount of creativity to customize their island. Thanks to the new features this entry introduces, like terraforming and DIY crafts, players have been able to make many unique creations. Turning their once deserted islands into a populated town, players may look to bring some cuisine to their island in the form of a restaurant.

There are a variety of food-related items in New Horizons, like napkins and ovens, that are just waiting to be used in a restaurant. This guide will take a look at ideas players should have in mind when designing their own Animal Crossing restaurant.

Where to Build Restaurants in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The first thing players need to plan out when designing their restaurant is where they will place it; inside their house, or outside on the island. Inside restaurants have the benefit of utilizing wallpaper and flooring, which cannot be placed outdoors. The different lighting levels can alter the mood players are looking for, and furniture can be placed on the walls indoors.  Different rooms in the house also have different shapes, like the upstairs and downstairs having more horizontal length than the side rooms downstairs. The only downside to indoor restaurants is that the size of the rooms limits the amount of objects players can place, so those looking to make an expansive dining experience should build outdoor restaurants. Using New Horizons’ Island Designer tool, players can add more natural flairs to their restaurant. Pathing can be used to create professional flooring, or players can build a river or cliff alongside their eatery for a relaxing view. Players should look at what furniture and crafting recipes they have available before they start, as that may dictate where they choose to set up their dream restaurant.

What Types of Restaurants to Build in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

When choosing what type of restaurant players want to build they should consider what type of food they would hypothetically serve. Most dining locations are centered around what food they cook, so players should have this in mind when deciding on their restaurants design. Of course, all restaurants should have tables and chairs for seating, but what types they are may change depending on the style of restaurant. Below are a few potential ideas to get players started.

Pizza

One of the first crafting recipes players have access to in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a brick pizza oven. For those looking to enrich their town with some coal-fired flavor, this style is one of the easiest to pull off. Of course, not all pizza restaurants are the same. Some are more hip with arcade machines, while others have more fine dining. Any furniture items from Italy could even make it an Italian restaurant. Again, what items and crafting recipes players have available will dictate what direction this theme goes towards.

Seafood

Those that participated in the Fishing Tourney may have received some exclusive furniture from C.J. Items such as the fish print poster will look right at home hanging up on the wall of a seafood restaurant. If players want to embrace a more pirate theme, they can place the anchor statue down as a decoration. The items gifted by Gullivarrr (totally not Gulliver) will also fit nicely here. Players that have helped this stranded pirate, and have lots of his gifts, can make use of them to make a pirate-themed fish restaurant.

Japanese

There are many furniture sets that fall right in place for a Japanese themed sushi restaurant. The Imperial table and sushi conveyor both help set the mood, but so too would items in the cherry blossom set. The fleeting beauty of the pink cherry blossoms may create a ‘wabi-sabi’ aesthetic that fit right in with a Japanese theme. If people are familiar with that concept, at least. As sushi is made from fish, items that can be used in the seafood theme, like C.J.’s fish print poster, can also work here. Any other decorations from Japan, like Lucky Cats or bamboo crafting recipes, can complete the theme should players have access to them.

Café

For those feeling a more laid back and natural approach to dining, consider constructing a cafe. Coffee machines and mugs are readily available for purchase in Nook’s Cranny, so it’s likely players already have something to start building their café. Outdoor furniture like the iron garden set and the natural garden set both work wonders here, and the teapots placed on top of them can complete the look. Many players already have gardens on their Animal Crossing islands, and this theme will complement that existing part of the island. Consider placing stalls with infused water dispensers and desserts, like cake, around a flower-filled plaza. Nothing will look more enticing than sitting in a garden next to a flowing river with a cup of coffee in hand. For those looking to make an indoor café, the blackboard wall, from Saharah, is a perfect fit thanks to its wonderful chalk illustrations of pastries.
