Torchlight 3 may not be officially released yet, but players can purchase an in-development build of the game. There is a lot of customization and features, including four playable character classes. It can be a difficult task to choose how to build your character, with so many different skills and a limited number of points. One might find a great skill to invest in early, but change their mind later on. Thankfully, there are a few means of repec-ing characters.

Torchlight 3 has gone through many reworks, including changing its name from Torchlight Frontiers. The game was originally meant to be a free-to-play persistent world with a cash shop. This means that Echantra Games could make even more sweeping changes and updates before Torchlight 3 comes out of its early access stage. This may include making character respecs more generous, or conversely possibly harder.

Respectacle Points and Items in Torchlight 3

Act 1 Boss Fight in Torchlight 3

Retraining a character is used via “Respectacle” points. Characters earn their first point at level 5, and then another free point every 10 more levels (15, 25, 35). This doesn’t leave a lot of points to retrain, as characters currently gain nearly 60 skill points. Instead, further repec points can be earned by collecting Respectacle consumable items.

Respectacles can drop from any boss monster but will have a higher chance of being loot from story bosses and chests. This means you can start farming them even after the first boss encounter. Additionally, you can respawn bosses by logging out and back in to reset the game's instance.

These items are considered consumable potions, so they will be easier to find by raising Potion Luck. Playing at Normal or Hard difficulty gives a +20% Potion Luck over Practice mode. Painful difficulty will further boost this bonus to +30% Potion Luck, and Ridiculous to +40% Potion Luck. Additionally, some armor pieces will also give enhanced Potion Luck. If your character is strong enough, battling against harder enemies is your best option.

Using Respectacles at Your Fort in Torchlight 3

Forts in Torchlight 3

To actually repec, you need to return to your Fort. First, you will need to build a Skill Station, specific to each class:

  • Arcanum: Dusk Mage Skill Station
  • Arms Cart: Sharpshooter Skill Station
  • Automation Shop: Forge Skill Station
  • Workshop: Railmaster Skill Station

In single-player you will only need one station. But, if you plan on engaging in frequent multiplayer games, it would be a good idea to make Skill Stations for every class. Otherwise, your teammates would need to leave your realm in order to respec. Also, aim to place stations together in an easy to find location.

Interact with your class Skill Station and select the skill you wish to retrain from the menu. Refunds are a 1:1 rate of Respectacles to skill points. Be warned that there is currently no confirmation prompt, your Respectacle points will be spent immediately. If you have fewer points than you assumed, be sure to check your consumables menu for Respectacle items you haven’t yet converted into points.

Even with careful build planning, players may change their minds on how to make their character. By repeatedly farming bosses for Respectacles, there is a means of fully remaking a hero’s abilities and strategy. It may take time grinding, but it can be a great option over completing restarting for scratch.
